I got ripped off!! (NBR)

I always HATE going to get my oil changed because I never know how to say "no" to all of the extra's... like when they take out your air filter every single time and they are like "oh this looks bad, you definitely need a new one"... like today when they did it and the filter was brand new and completely clean. Anyway, I usually make DH bring the cars for oil changes so I can avoid all of this.

Anyway! Today when I went I declined every extra, but when they said "do you want the oil for a car with high miles?" I said yes, since my car has 90k miles. WELL when they were finished my bill was $75!!! Ugh, I am beyond upset about this and I don't think I will ever go alone for an oil change again, I can't win!

That's all, just needed to get that out!

  • That's outrageous!  I've never paid more that $40 for an oil change and that was when they actually replaced the air filter for me!

  • Ugh. You need to go somewhere else.

Have no idea what kind of car you have, but if it happens to be a Toyota, I always had really good experiences at Kings Toyota. In fact, we still drive up there from Kentucky (after a couple of bad experiences at the local dealership) if we need something done.

They never pushed extras on me, always told me the total up front before I agreed to any service, and usually did those little extras (like changing the air filter, rotating tires, etc) for no add'l charge.

  • We've stopped going to the "instant" oil change places for this reason.  It was costing way too much money.  Now we go to a local tire place and get it done for 30 bucks or less.  No hassles about air filter either!

  • I know you live near the Anderson area and I have to recommend you try CarX in Withamsville. We take DH's truck there for oil changes and it's only $25ish bucks and alot of times I get a coupon out of the Reach magazine and it makes it $20. They have NEVER tried to sell us anything that wasn't necessary. I have even asked about things like brakes, filters etc.. and they are honest and tell me that it doesn't need changed yet if it doesn't. Great customer service and we have been going there for about 3 years now.

  • Ack!  That sucks.  I go to Valvoline and they take competitors coupons so I almost always get everything for 19.99. I can be a huge *** when it come to that kind of crap.  I HATE when they try to take advantage of people (usually women).  If they tell me about something that needs to be done extra I always say "how much?" and then usually "I'll have my husband/dad look at it and decide if they think it needs to be done, thanks for the heads up".

Side note: DH knows NOTHING about cars and he gets taken advantage of every damn time.  So, now I told him only I get to handle car troubles.....hehehe.

  • Ugh, this is why I use my hole-in-the-wall mechanic for everything.  He's up front and honest, and has never ripped me off.  FWIW, BIL has been ripped off twice by Grismer's b/c he knows nothing about tires/brakes and just says "yes" to anything and everything, to the tune of over $1000.  Needless to say my sister was pissed.  I think he's been banned from all things car-related.
  • Dude, that sucks! I would be pissed! They should have told you how much that was going to be when they asked you... ridiculous! Last time I went to the firestone by Ace Hardware with a coupon, got a oil change and filter for 20 bucks... there is something they wanted me to add, but I use the same excuse MrsCooley does... my DH usually does this and I will have to talk to him about it, ,etc... :( Sorry Emily!
  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions on where to go next time! I will definitely not let that happen to me again, grrr

  • Brian can/will do your oil changes, from now on!  Smile
  • I hate that. Grismer used to pull that kind of crap on me ALL of the time. I found a local Midas chain that I love. They have never once tried to cheat me out of anything and I've never paid more than $18 for an oil change there because they are always finding coupons and current discounts that apply. Plus, every sixth oil change is free. The guys are nice and never treat me like I'm an idiot because I'm female. Start looking for a place that treats you with respect!

  • This is why I am glad DH is our family mechanic.

And I will ditto pps, never agree for them to do anything until after you "talk" to your DH. Even if you don't talk, it's a good excuse for them to leave you alone.
