T&P or vibes request

If you did not see my reply to Megs confession post.  My SFIL, (the man who raised my DH), is actively dying.  I don't think he will survive the weekend.  We are heartbroken.  We had planned a trip there at the end of the month, but canceled because of the recent news on his declining health.  We knew we would not make it in time.  So new plans on spur of the moment must be made. Thoughts, prayers, vibes, or whatever for the family are much appreciated.

Which airlines are more rate friendly at last minute?  We will need to at least get DH to Tampa next week.  It would be nice if DD and I can go too, but the rates I am seeing are very expensive.

Also, how do you tell a 2 year old her papaw is gone?  She knows him and talks about her "papaw at the beach" all the time.  Today, she said "Go see my papaw.  Papaw at the beach?"  Heartbreaking.  Is there a way to let her know that papaw is not at the beach anymore?  I just don't know.

Re: T&P or vibes request

  • I'm so sorry. T&P with you and your family.

I have no advice on what to tell your daughter. That is really tough.

    I would check out www.priceline.com, www.cheaptickets.com and www.hotwire.com

They will find the best prices for you. Good luck.

  • My sister just booked her flight home from San Diego and booked it at 1AM (4AM our time) and the flight was 40% cheaper than it was during the day. She said she always books her flight at that time and they are always much cheaper. It's a Delta flight. For Tampa, I'd check Airtran out of Dayton. They have a direct flight that's usually pretty cheap. I'll be praying for your family!
  • i will keep you guys in my prayers. if you dont have as much luck on the travel sites, you could call the airline, i know they were flexible with my mom when my grandpa was sick. its worth a call to see what kind of special fares they might have.
  • Some of the airlines offer bereavement/emergency rates. You may have to provide documentation from the hospital to be eligible. We flew to Minneapolis on a bereavement rate for my grandpas funeral a few years ago. I'm sorry he isn't doing well.

  • I don't have anything to add about the airlines, but I wanted to say I'm sorry to hear the news.  It's so hard when they are so far away.

  • The other ladies gave the same advice that I have so I hope one of those suggestions will work out for you. I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am and that I will be sending my vibes your way.

As far as advice for DD, I just remember being told when I was young that my grandparents had went to heaven and that they would always be with me now as an angel. I think your DD may still be a little young to comprehend that but maybe not?

  • I recently heard about St. Petersburg airport and Allegiant Air which flies into that airport.  It's supposed to be very affordable.  When we were in Florida (Tampa area) earlier this summer, a friend of DH's grandma who transports people to and from airports told us about it.  They don't fly out of Cincy or Dayton so you'd have to drive a little bit (Toledo, Lexington) but it may be worth it for the price.  May be worth checking out if you can't find a good deal anywhere else

I am so sorry to hear about this.  Losing my mom was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through (and am still going through) and I remember the weeks and days leading up to her death, knowing that she was going to die and not being able to do anything about it.  I hate knowing that anyone has to go through this.

I lost my grandpa when I was 2 years old and I think my parents talked about how he was in heaven and about how he was watching over us all the time.  I remember my mom talking about him a lot.  I guess I was okay with it?  It's hard to say what I would say or do if it was my own child.

  • So sorry you are going through this! I have never had to get flights last minute, so I am no help... hope you can find something...

    Sending T&P your way!

  • Oh gosh.... I'm so sorry to hear that! Thoughts & Prayers with you & your family. (((((HUGS)))))
  • I"m so sorry to hear about this!  I can't really help with your questions, but thoughts and prayers are with both you and your family.
  • Hugs B! Tell your DH (seriously, one of the nicest guys I've ever met!) that I'm sorry he's going through this.
  • I don't have any advice for you, but I just wanted to say I'm very sorry for what your family is going through right now.
  • I have no advice for you, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I'll definitely keep your family in my thoughts.

  • We flew on Allegiant Air out of Lexington to Orlando, and they also go to St Pete's/Tampa.  We had a great experience and their rates were fantastic... I'm not sure about last minute deals, but you can check their website - www.allegiantair.com (to save choose no seat assigments and no priority boarding)

Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.  I hope you all get to make arrangements to spend time with him, and that if he is going to pass that it is peaceful.

Thank you!  Thank you!  I did not know of this airline.  I just checked out rates, and we may go there in late August even if we have the last minute trip next week.  The total cost for the three of us, out of Lexington,  for late August is....drumroll...$259.00 total, including tax and fees. What?  I am in love.  We can get DH there next week for under $100, last minute.  I need to go look at the baggage fees, but that freaking rocks and takes a load of pressure off of our budget.  Thank you!
