So my little 34 weeker had an EKG done about 2 months after being taken via ambulance to cinci children's hospital after she turned blue on me. She had a chest x-ray which showed her heart to be large, and then an EKG and then an echo. Everyone told us it all looked fine... Last Friday we were at the Vascular Malformation Clinic to see about getting her ulcerated hemangioma surgically removed and the docs said they wanted to do another EKG before deciding if she should go under general anesthesia or not. Well they just called and said it looks like she may have "Right Ventricular Hypertrophy" and that we need to make a formal appointment with the cardiologist.
Ok... so the nurse told me that her first EKG showed her to possibly have Left Vent. Hypertrophy, now this one shows the possibility of Right Vent. Hypertrophy and they can't seem to find the results of her echo... FIrst off, could I be any more worried? Uh, probably not. Does anyone have any ideas what this is because I'm too scared to google it. I'm hoping it is something common in preemies that she'll grow out of? Second, why wasn't this noticed during her 3 week NICU stay? I'm worried, upset, angry and scared...

I googled it. It's an enlargement of the right side of the heart and can have different causes and different treatments.
I'm sorry you are going through this. Did they do any tests in the NICU? In the hospital where DD was, they don't do a lot of tests unless there is something wrong, particularly if the baby is an older preemie. For example, DD never received a head ultrasound because she was older than 30 weeks.
I think only a medical professional who reviews your case can tell you if it's something that she'll grow out of. I hope she does.
