Hawaii Babies

how would you pronounce this name?

friend's new baby - they finally chose a name when checking out of the hospital.  I couldn't figure it out, and her dad finally posted the pronunciation on FB ("for those of you who were wondering") ...just curious what you ladies would have thought!

Re: how would you pronounce this name?

  • i voted for the last option - i'd probably say anna-leez or on-a-leez

the -iese at the end makes me think -leez instead of -lease

your poll makes me smile though b/c i thought about asking everyone this same question (months ago) b/c i wondered if everyone on this board knew how to pronounce miss A's name correctly.  i've found that 99% of people i meet say it correctly right away, but we have had one person ask us if it's "on-a-lease"

on a side note - we really wanted to spell her name "Analise" instead of with the double n but a friend of mine pointed out that she'd get teased a lot in school for being "anal" so we decided against it!

I had trouble deciding but voted for the first choice.

Jaime, your comment about your DD being teased later down the road reminded me of something funny. Cassie sometimes leaves the "c" off in her name, so often she replies that "Assie" is her name. I can only imagine what the mean kids at school are going to come up with!

  • I had to read and re-read a couple of times but eventually voted for the first option.

    too cute!

  • This was my "name" in German class in junior high!  I voted for the 3rd option.... Anna-lease, since that is how it would be pronounced in German (or Anna-lease-uh).  Incidentally, this is one of my top choice names for a girl (someday!).

    Awwww! Hehe, that's so cute!

I voted for the third option just cuz that's how I would pronounce it...are you gonna tell us how the parents are pronouncing it later? =)

  • I voted for 'An-Ah-Lease'.
  • I think my spellings may not have been clear enough, so the poll results are a little suspect... Smile  but at any rate, according to the FB update, they're pronouncing her name "ah-nuh-lease"

i didn't realize it was a german name!  i thought the spelling was interesting, and the "liese" part threw me off.  i thought it was anne-lee-es (the first option), but in retrospect, i think jaime's "leez" makes more sense - but then maybe i would have come up with "anne-leez"?!

so...how do you pronounce it?  Embarrassed  i always thought of it as an-a-lease...b/c i say "anna" instead of "on-a" (hah, see my earlier post about san-dra instead of son-dra), and i would pronounce "elise" as e-lease...regardless, i've always loved her name!

  • I voted for the third option, but I actually say it more like "-leez" than "-lease" (which is probably just lazy pronunciation on my part lol).

yep you are saying right :) it is spelled Annalise but I think sometimes it is mispelled as Annelise... I am sure she is going to have to correct people some of the time, just like I have always had to tell people that it's Jaime, not Jamie :)

I told Teri/HulaLove that I think it's cute that our daughters sort of have the same name, but reverse.  I have Annalise and she has Elyse Ann :) (though technically Ann is her middle name)
