What does "sleep training" mean?

My child never sleeps well to this day so I don't say this from a place of arrogance, I just don't really know what the term means. I see it in a lot of threads "when we started sleep training....", etc but I have no idea what it means.

I googled and there's a million definitions out there from CIO to systematic regimines....

What does it mean to you?

    Whenever I hear that term I think of someone not going to their child when they cry.

    I think it usually means CIO. If you're not a CIOer there's a No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers. I did some training I guess with Ben at around 18 months just trying to get him to fall asleep on his own. Just making small gradual steps to remove myself from his falling asleep routine.

    For me all it means is getting into a sleep routine where you and the kid know what to expect.  It may or may not mean CIO.  But I guess I use the term in a more general way.

    Susan, I'm not flaming and I don't want to start a big discussion about it, but your response reads to me like it is intended to make people who sleep-train feel bad. It certainly made me feel bad. 

    To me sleep training means helping your child learn how to go to sleep and stay asleep on his/her own. However you go about it.

    It means several things to me.  1) It means putting your child on a pretty strict schedule so they go to bed at the same time every night. 2) It also means that you are working towards teaching your child to learn to fall asleep on their own.  This may or may not mean CIO  3)It means teaching the parents that it not always going to be the easiest route but the end is rewarding : )

    I honestly don't know what the gang up here is but the question was "what does it mean to you" and Susan answered.  She wasn't flaming anyone or putting anyone down.  That is what it means to her.  Should she not have answered?

    I understand that some people feel strongly about not letting their child CIO. But just because it isn't right for you it doesn't mean it is wrong to sleep train. I most certainly do go to my chid when he cries. Many times every day. 

    I really really wasn't trying to gang up or flame. Susan, I think you are very sweet and a great member of our community and I value your input and ideas! I was simply saying how what you said made me feel, and hoping to maybe say that parents who sleep train do not feel they are being neglectful or cruel, and that is a very hard thing to do, and being made to feel bad about it really doesn't help.

    I love, love, love sleep training!  Turned us from zombies who never got more than 90 minutes of sleep to a STTN, lovin' life little family.  I think PPs have hit it on the head, but sleep training to me is using one (or several) techniques to help you child get the sleep that they need.  For us that means sticking to a fairly strict EARLY bed time, and breaking several associations (swaddle/bouncing) that we used to help him sleep when he was itty bitty.

     'course the other end of the spectrum is the new uber-pc term "potty learning."   eyeroll...

    lol at potty learning!    I was just thinking about how the term "sleep training" has such a bad rap, but "potty training" doesnt, but I guess it does and I was just unaware!

    Before I knew there were more then one side to the story on Sleep Training - I just instinctively knew I wanted Alex on a schedule, and a strict routine.  That's what sleep training meant to me when I heard the topic years later.

    I did CIO, but that's because I thought that's what I was suppose to do to get him to sleep on a routine at night by himself in his crib.  I never even considered co-sleeping, but mostly because I didn't know of such a thing existed.
