Matching sibling names?

What is your opinion on matching sibling names? DD and new LO's names are kind of matchy, but I can't get DH to change his mind on the mn, though I've tried. DD is Clara Annalise. New LO will be Caleb Alexander. I was trying for Caleb Matthew...so he would be named after DH. But as soon as I suggested that, DH said he wanted to name him Caleb Matthew Alexander. I don't see a point in LO having 2 mn's. And the only reason DH likes Alexander is b/c he thinks he will be calling LO Lex (Lex Luther)....I told him there is no way he is calling LO Lex (this is what I get for marrying a superman fanatic). I like other boy names, but DH seems to be stuck on it. Any suggestions?

Re: Matching sibling names?

  • I don't think Clara Annalise and Caleb Alexander are matchy at all. Yes, the first and middle names both start with the same letter, but that's it. I don't see it as a problem at all. LOVE both Clara and Caleb, by the way!

As far as the middle name goes, I am all for a middle name with family significance so I would prefer the name with meaning over just a random name your DH likes. However, I'm not sure how to tell you to come to a compromise.

  • I don't think your two LO's names are too matchy.  They don't rhyme or sound too similiar in names.  Our DD's name is Natalie, and we had to throw out Nathan (which we both like) cuz that is too matchy.

I'd make sure to really get your point across that your LO will not be called Lex, if that's something you are really against.  We are undecided on names, but DH wants to use his name, James, for a mn.  He likes Tyler James and Adam James because he likes the idea of nn's TJ or AJ.  I'm absolutely 100% against initial nn's.  DH just kind of laughs it off, but I've been really adamant in telling him that if he plans on using initials as a nn, even if just around us, then we cannot use that name.  I hate it!

Anyway, no, your names aren't too matchy, and just make sure you and DH are on the same page with nn preference.  :)

  • I think its kindof weird that you wouldn't let him call his own son something. But regardless, I like both Matthew and alexander for a middle name so you can't rally go wrong. As for them being matchy, yeah, I think they kindof match and I've never been a fan of people who purposely try and match their names and veto names that don't go, but I do like both names of your children.
  • Clara & Caleb are nice together!  Having the same initial isn't too matchy, IMO.  (My daughter is Clara, too!)

Lex is way too much for me.  My DH would try to do something like that, too!!  "Lex" is what all the girls named "Alexis" that I know go by.  Tell your DH Lex is a girl's nickname.

  • I would go with Caleb Matthew if he was going to call my kid Lex! No way on that nn.

I have to agree with this point; it's just a nickname.

Yes, Caleb A. and Clara A. are similar, but I don't think that's a bad thing, unless you have a third who is also a C. A.
