Do they give you a daily report? DD gets a paper saying how many times it was changed, what time, and "what" was in the diaper. There have been times I have picked her up and she had another brand on that isn't ours.. so maybe there was a mixup.
DD isn't going through 8 diapers a day. Maybe 2 or 3. I see nothing wrong with that.
DS usually goes through 4-5 diapers a day now. Yesterday, he went through 5 at daycare. They told me that they do diaper checks every hour and that the only time they wouldn't change a diaper is if it was completely dry.

Nope, no daily report. That would be nice. Maybe there was a mixup, but I will certainly inquire tomorrow.

We change when he wakes up, mid morning, after nap, before bed. Seems normal to me.
ditto. sometimes he's even pretty dry at 11am when i check him before nap. I'd be happy about it, less $$ thrown away. changing every hour if there is any pee seems a bit much to me.
I babysit my two nieces for about the same time span, and I usually only go through 2-3 diapers each per day. I change them when they look "full" (with pee) or if they poop. No point in wasting the diapers, and neither of them has even had a diaper rash the entire time I've watched them.
Our daycare changes every two hours or more frequently if it is noticeable that they need it (ie. a poop). They have a whiteboard that shows when each kid last had a change and we get a report at the end of the day. She usually goes through four diapers per day.

Our daycare does this as well... they will also indicate what type of diaper she had and if she was dry when checked. But they definitely check every 2 hours unless she's sleeping.

This. I believe it is a licensing requirement unless they are sleeping.
Thanks ladies for your responses! I never thought I was overdoing it at home, but maybe I am. I know he's probably getting more liquids at home than at daycare. But I never let a diaper get to the point where it's sagging. Maybe some of you view it as wasteful, but I wouldn't want to sit in my pee for long periods of time.

I change DS every 2-3 hours on weekends when I'm home with him (more often when he poops). That means I usually go through 5 diapers/day total. Daycare should go through 3-4 per day IMO. I don't think it's wasteful either. I HATE when I pick up DS and his diaper is so full it's heavy - that's gross to me and I change him right away (before we go home).
It's possible they did change him more than twice - but used another LO's diaper instead.
Re: Sent 8 diapers to daycare
We only change DS every 4 hours or so unless there's reason to (i.e. peed out of diaper, pooped). I don't think that's unreasonable.

Diaper change at 11 am + Diaper change at 2 pm = 2 diapers
