3rd Trimester

how far away is your hospital from where you live

We are moving to a whole new area in a week and a half.  We are a military family, so doctors are picked for us.  This just now all got figured out, and I found out that the hospital where my appointments will be and where I will deliver is an hour away from our home, not including traffic.  This makes me really nervous.  The one I delivered DD at in this area is 15 minutes away.  I guess I'm just curious what others are dealing with.  :)

  • 5 min but we live in a small area

  • We're about 20 minutes away from our hospital.
  • I live in Rhode Island and we have one hospital that specializes in delivering babies and it's about 5-10 minutes from me, however it could be 40 minutes for someone else.

  • 1.8 miles.  We measured yesterday on the way to the tour.
  • We are 20-25 minutes away depending on traffic.

  • 7 mins door to door
  • 20 minutes, not counting traffic

  • We have about a 10-15 minute drive.
  • We have a hospital 5 mins away from us that I could deliver at, but most likely will deliver at their main hospital 15 mins away.

  • 10 to 15 minutes depending on the traffic trying to get through the front gate (we are a military family as well and will be delivering in the Army hospital).

  • 5-10 minutes...
  • About 15 minutes depending on traffic.

  • We are about 20 mins away, but when DD was born we were over an hour away (and that wasnt even taking into account the winter weather in MN).  I talked to my Dr about it, and let him know how far away I was.  He actually had me follow a different standard as to when I should leave then most people.  He had me leave earlier.  When you see your new Dr, let him/her know how far your commute is, and they will have a recommendation for you on when you should head out to the hospital!! Hope that helps!
  • An hour or more with traffic. Worth the drive, although we have three hospitals within twenty minutes of here. My husband is more worried about the distance than I am. There'll be a different set of guidelines about when we should head in and the OB said to tell the nurses about the commute if they try to send us home.
  • 15-20 minutes away pretty much all the time.

  • I was bummed to find out my doctor isn't affiliated with the hospital that is literally across the street from their office (it's actually their satellite office) and is 15 minutes away with traffic.

So, the hospital we're registered with is about 45 minutes away depending on traffic. This makes DH nervous

Thank you!  Yes, I was thinking the same!  We are moving to a pretty heavily populated area, so I'm thinking that hour commute is only gonna apply if it's over night, lol.  At least that's what I've heard from people.

  • We're about 30 minutes away.

  • We live 5-10 minutes away, depending on if we are dealing with traffic or get stuck at lights. I'm pretty comfortable with this and glad it's not further.

  • 90 miles. however, I am on an island, and it equals a 6 hour ferry ride, or a medevac flight to the hospital.

I have to leave 2 weeks early because of this... So i am leaving Wednesday!

  • We live about 1.5 hours with no traffic and 2 hours with moderate traffic. I am high risk and that's the closest Dr and hospital that deal with what I need. I'm not to worried about the distance because the plan is that I will be induced early. So, hopefully I won't go into labor on my own.
  • I'd say we're 10 minutes from our hospital, maybe less.

  • About 20 minutes from our apartment. And about 45-50 minutes from my work, which is where I think my water will break..........

It's about 5 miles, maybe 10 minutes away.

With my 1st son, the hospital I delivered at was about 35 minutes away. With my 2nd son, the hospital I delivered at was about 40 minutes away.

  • Maybe 5 minutes? It's about a mile from our house.
  • 20 minutes w/o traffic. I live almost center city Charlotte, NC so it can be bad

  • 25 mins. DH works there. lol.

My cousin is military and had to drive an hour + to their hospital despite there being 15 hospitals between here and there. Lame.

  • About 4 minutes including traffic. With DD we were driving to the hospital around 3am and there was no traffic..we left my house while I was having a contraction and arrived at the hospital in time for another one. I love it! My OBs office is also about 5 mins away. We live in a suburb w/a community hospital, which is nice.

  • 32 miles - 1 hour drive. It's the same  hospital we used for DS w/o  any trouble, and this time it's a scheduled c/s so we don't expect any trouble...
  • We are about 2 hours away, perhaps 1h45min.  There is one hospital closer, about 45 minutes away, however they don't deliver first babies there, only the 2nd or more.  If it was a serious emergency, I could get airlifted, as there's an ER room (not a hospital) 5 minutes away (we live in a major ski resort area), and the helicopter makes regular trips to the hospital in emergencies - weather permitting.

switch to standard so you dont have to go on base. seriously. especially if its that far! and youll get to pick your doctors and maternity care will still be free. the only thing you have to pay is the overnight hospital fee which is 16 bucks a night. i wouldnt feel comfortable if my hospital was that far away.

  • My DH is in the military too and my dr./ hospital is 1.5 hours away. I was worried initially I would go into labor and wouldn't make it, but my OB told me to call her if I thought I was in labor and if she didn't think I could make it go to the closest hospital she would let Tricare know. So that's the plan :) I stressed about it for weeks but now I'm not worried about it.

Even though our hospital is 2 hours away, we live in a decent sized community of over 10,000 and many many women have had babies at the hospital 2 hours away.  Our OB knows the distance and checks on us closely leading up to the due date.  We're also told to go to the hospital when contractions are much further apart, than if the hospital was local.  If there was an emergency, there are outstanding ER MD's on call 5 minutes away and they would make a decision on what to do then.  I haven't heard of anyone having an issue.

I guess since I'm 2 hours away, I don't think 1 hour away is all that bad.
