How old for a nice necklace or ring?

My 8-month-old niece was born the same month as me. I have a child's birthstone ring that I want to pass on to her when she is old enough. What would be a good age? I'm thinking 5. I'm also thinking of getting her a necklace with her birthstone. What age do little girls wear necklaces without having to worry about them chewing or choking on them?

    I think 4 is okay for a necklace but I'd wait on the ring.  My jewelry loving DD is 6 and does fine with necklaces, earrings, and her nameplate bracelet but would lose a ring.

    Both of my girls got necklaces as gifts for their baptisms. My three year old is allowed to wear hers for church and special occasions. She's pretty careful. I think I'd wait on a ring until 6 or 7 at least.
