Milk ?

We have tried organic whole milk twice and both times have lead to horrible runny poop and bleeding chemical burn like diaper rash.  As soon as we stop the milk, the poop goes back to normal and the diaper rash clears up in less than a week.

She eats yogurt, cheese, cream cheese, butter all fine and they don't bother her at all.

I was doing some research and read that sometimes whole milk can be too rich for toddlers and that some people have better luck with 2%

Has anyone heard this?  I am at a loss.

  • oh my, poor thing! I have no idea!

  • I would definitely try 2%. More recent AAP suggestions suggest that whole milk isn't necessary for every toddler. Esp. if Evie is getting lots of other dairy (and therefore fat), she could probably do fine on 2%.

    Hope it helps!

  • Putting the boys on 2% was one of my questions to ask the pedi today at their 15mo appnt. They do not have any problems with the whole milk, it's just that is what we drink and I hate having to buy two different kinds of milk. Sometimes there is no room for 3 gallons in our fridge.
  • I've read on other boards that 2% works better for some kids for various reasons.  Give it a shot, making sure she's getting good fat elsewhere.

I think this is where I'm going to try.  She definately doesn't have a problem getting food and fat from other places.  She eats LOTS of cheese and yogurt and last night I swear she ate half the box of Annie's mac and cheese!  She would have eaten the whole box if I'd let her.  Then rolled around the living room like a fat little piggy. It was HILARIOUS!  I am lucky in the way that she pretty much eats anything and eats a lot of it, so I am not worried about the calories and fat.  I am still giving her 2 bottles a day (bad I know) one in the morning and one at bedtime so she's still getting 12oz of formula a day until I figure out the whole milk thing.

  • Our doc wants us to stay on whole milk for quite a while but she specifically said it was because Maya was such a skinny thing--90% height, 10% weight.  So it sounded like the real reason was for calories and if that's not an issue for you then hopefully 2% will be the solution!  Poor baby and her bad diaper rashes =(
