Military Families

WIC

How many ladies use this amazing tool? I have an appt. Tuesday to get all paperwork together and get started on it but I was just wondering how many ladies are on it? Do you ever feel like some people look down on you because you're enrolled? I'm sorry, but I'll take saving $80 a grocery trip anyday! Even with the smug looks

Re: WIC

  • I am! Being overseas, everyone under E5 gets it. It is a pain in the butt at the checkout counter, but it's well worth it. You get a TON of milk (which we don't use, we're a soy milk family), whole grain products, peanut butter, and $10 worth of fresh fruit/veg each month. At least, that's what I get because I'm pregnant with my first.

  • I say if you get it, take it. I don't understand why people would give you looks about it. No matter how much money someone has, if they're offered that kind of savings on their shopping every week or month, they're going to take it.

  • I was on it, but with  income from deployment we no longer qualify. I really miss it. I feel like almost everyone on the post I was at who was pregnant or had a small child used WIC, so nobody looked down on you for using it.

  • We qualify, but we don't use it.  WIC is a program that just because you qualify doesn't mean you will get it if the funding is overdrawn.  Would I have loved to save money on formula when DS was a baby?  Of course.  He was a vigorous eater, and it was expensive.  However, I felt that it would be an abuse of a program because we didn't *need* to use it.  Nothing makes me more angry than seeing women carrying designer purses, driving large SUVS, etc. and going into the WIC office.

Not true. If you're going to take things you don't need, just own it.

Exactly. When my H is working 80+ hours a week because of some stupid exercise and he has nothing to show for it (like overtime or special duty pay) then suddenly I don't feel so weird about using WIC.

  • I am on it.  I have been since before DH joined the army.  I found out from my sister-in-law that I will be able to stay on it even though he is in the army too because they only take base pay into account.  I am a SAHM so I have no income, so all the help we can get I will take!

ill use it if breastfeeding doesnt work out, because formula is expensive. but other than that? not gonna use it.

  • I have it and love it. Without my income we qualify and it's great. Saves a ton on formula.

  • We are on it and have been since DS was born aside for a few months. IT saved us so much when DS was on formula he was on special kind and cost almost 20 a can. I stopped it a bit after DS turned one but still did not use milk. Once on milk full time went back on and it so helpful to us. We go through about 5-8 Gals a month so I still buy a lot that is not covered.

If they paid our service members more then you wouldn't have to deal with any of this; they are so underpaid it is crazy.

Not necessarily. A person withno education, no experience, can come in as an E-1 and make over $20k his first year, plus his housing, food, medical expenses, and uniforms are all 100% paid for. Junior enlisted pay is intended to support the servicemember, not a family. My husband and I are both NCOs collectively pulling in nearly six figures. Neither of us has a college degree, so I'd say we're doing pretty damn well.

Luckily 3rd Army is coming in so now more military people :o) The problem with being here is that there are so many people that abuse the system I can kind of see why I get weird looks, but then most civilians think that military families have so much we don't need any help.

Well, our Air Force base is "closing" due to BRAC, it's gonna be an Army Air Field, but we've got the 82nd so no worries there. Now if the Army left, this town would be a ghost town as well. I don't get why most civilans think that way, they should live in our shoes for a bit.

What's up with the victim mentality here? What's so bad about your shoes? Many civilians would absolutely love to be in your position, to know that they, or their spouse, as is your situation, won't be laid off because of the economy, but they can't because the services are so overmanned. If you can't make ends meet on one income, get a job or cut back expenses. Nobody's forcing junior enlisted people to get married and make babies.

No, nobody is forcing us to have babies, but many civilians don't understand military life. Most civilians don't have a clue what it's like to go through an 18 month deployment. They don't know what it's like to know that their husband is risking his life to save another soldiers. They don't have to think of what they'll tell their children if their daddy doesn't come back. Yes, we choose this life. And I absolutely love it. And yes we can live on one income and yes, we can afford our daughter.  I am not ashamed of getting WIC for formula. Yes, I can afford it, but we were approved for WIC and I'm going to use it. We won't be eligible long, but while we are I am going to use it.

My issue is that if you CAN afford your daughter, you should leave the public assistance programs to the people who cannot afford to feed themselves and their child. It has nothing to do with the military.

I don't have a victim mentality. Civilans think we have it easy, but it's not always so easy. And vice versa. I know it goes both ways. I chose to marry into the military and all the hardships that come with it and I'm very proud of my husband and his willingness to serve our country. We're fine on one income...I'm all about cutting back, clipping coupons, finding deals, talking with the phone and cable company every year to get a lower price. And no one's making me have babies. But just because we chose to be a one income family so I can be a SAHM, I'm not about to let anyone tell me I shouldn't use a service that we're eligable for! Who are you to determine who has a valid "need" for this service? I've worked for 14 years, paid my taxes and give back to the community. I have a right to use a service that my taxes went towards.

  • I don't understand the military and their sense of entitlement to wic. First of all, the hospital and doctors all push wic like we should all BE on it. Like it's just as common as BAS, and Bah. This is part of the problem.

WIC is government assistance. Technically most of us DO NOT qualify for this program. We only qualify because they take out our bah and bas. You DO realize those are part of our pay right? You cannot claim victim because you only make $1500 a month. Well, technically you make $2500 a month after bas and bah, so if you were in the civilian world you would not qualify.

This is NOT a savings program. This is to help people who CANNOT afford milk and cheese and formula for their baby. I went on WIC last year when I lost my job and could not afford formula for my son and could not breastfed due to him being a preemie. I thanked GOD for wic as we deplete our savings pretty quickly due to my bedrest and my son being in the nicu. But the point is we HAD savings to live on for emergencies like that. I wish we would have had more so I never had to use it, but was grateful for the program while I needed it.

It is NOT free money. It is not a savings plan so that you can go out to resturants, and enjoy extra things.  I saw so many of my friends on wic, but then went away every weekend, had two car payments, boat and trailer payments. This is not what wic is for people.

It really makes me sick that you all think you deserve it. If you are SAHM by CHOICE and on wic then you are abusing the reason it is in place. Get off you ass and go to work to pay for your food.

WHATEVER....^^^^^if you don`t want to use it nobody is making you, but I think it is a great program and I will use it as long I can. I think thats what we deserve after 5 DEPLOYMENTS and 12 years in the Army.

TWELVE years in the Army and FIVE deployments and you still need government assistance?

Fiscal Management classes.  Take one.  They're FREE.

I don't understand the military and their sense of entitlement to wic. First of all, the hospital and doctors all push wic like we should all BE on it. Like it's just as common as BAS, and Bah. This is part of the problem.

Yeah, you signed up for the job sweetie. Don't Biiitch about it. Military life sucks, but it doesn't qualify to use up the resources our economy has. You are NOT gauranteed to see a pay raise every january. Do you think civilians see a pay raise every january?  Get over your self deserving attitude that the world owes you just because you dh has been deployed.
