pcsing advice?

So , my husband came home and said " I'm reenlisting and we are going to camp pendleton".

I have been to californa , but I really know nothing about living there. Does anyone have any idea of the safer cities to live in? My husband will be working right next to the Del Mar gate? right off of oceanside I guess.

Did you ever move with Tmo? Is it cheap to have them move us or move it ourseleves ? We are relocating from Camp Lejeune.

Has anyone ever lived on base? Are the houses nice or should we go off base? Also If we have custody of my 14 year old sister in-law and a new born on the way will we get a 3 bedroom? I really don't want to force a teenager to share a room with a newborn. My husband at this moment is a e-4 but on the first he will be a E-5.

Really any advice anyone has at all will be welcome. I'm trying not to stress , but i have never lived in a big city, or had to move with a 13 year old in mind in the middle of the school year.

Thanks so much

  • I highly recommend having TMO move you.  We just did a dity move from TX to NC and it was not the best experience.  It was stressful and we had to have help from family to make it work.  We've done moves with TMO and it's gone fairly smooth besides some damages that were covered.  Having TMO move you won't cost you anything.  You also get paid for the travel, so unless you overspend, you won't have any out-of-pocket expenses.

We have lived on base, but only at Cherry Point.  This is our second time here and we're in a different neighborhood, but it's okay.  Housing varies so much from base to base.  I've never been to Pendleton, so I can't help you with that.  Have you checked the base website to find anything about housing?

  • I definitely recommend having TMO move you, especially since you're pregnant. Moving with TMO is enough work to make me want to sleep for a week, I can't imagine doing it without them while pregnant.

Once you get your orders you will meet with a counselor who can answer all of your questions about the move.

  • Do you have legal custody?  Is she already considered a dependent to your DH?  It's important that you have everything legal because I think that will help you get the extra room.  I'd check with housing in Pendleton and see what they say.  You may also want to check with JAG and make sure you have all your legal ducks in a row for her.

I'd have TMO move me.  But that's me.

  • Have TMO move you. We have PCS'd 5 times and it has always been nice to have TMO do all the work. I think it makes a bad impression to get to a new base and then try to hit people up to help you move. Have legal custody of the 14yr old and you shouldn't have a problem getting a 3 bedroom. CA is really expensive so living on base could be a good option and a nice way to meet new people.

  • We recently PCS'd, though it was much closer than yours.  We moved from CL to Quantico.  I can tell you that DH's SSGT did a DITY move from CA to NC, and he said he made a good $6000 off the move by renting a uhaul.

We did a dity move as well, and we made about $4500 from doing it ourselves.  It really depends on what you are comfortable with.  You can even consider contracting your own movers, but packing everything yourself.  You won't make as much money off of the move, but you will still probably be under the amount that the military would pay for TMO to do the move.
