washing CD's?

I thought I had read that the inserts would just fall out of the BG 3.0's when they were washed...but that didn't work for all of my diapers...do you remove the inserts prior to washing?  and mine didn't come clean this first time...some were still orangey from the poo...I am currently rewashing them, but is there anything I missed?

My washing procedure:

Cold rinse

Long wash hot/cold cycle with 1/4 detergent and an extra rinse...

Thanks!

Re: washing CD's?

  • I'm no CD laundry expert, but I'm pretty sure the only pockets that don't require the inserts to be removed are the ones which have openings on both ends of the pockets (eg smartipants). I don't think that's the case with the BG 3.0.

  • I don't take our BG 3.0 inserts out, they come out in the wash unless they're newborns.. the newborn inserts don't come out on their own.

hmm...i wonder why ours didn't all come out?  some of them did...but not all...and the ones that didn't, definitely didn't get clean.  ugh.
  • I take mine out. What kind of laundry detergent are you using? I do a short cold/cold with 1T Rockin Green and then a long hot/cold/cold with 2T detergent. I also line dry them in the sun.

  • All of mine come out.  Some thoughts -- are you using the normal wash or a wash that agitates more?  That will help.  Also are you using the laundry tabs or are you hooking the tabs together in the back?  Opening up the diaper and attaching the tabs to each other will help too.  Finally, are you using a full washer of water?  That also helps -- even with a smaller load we always use at least the second highest amount if not the highest amount of water -- more agitation gives those inserts a chance to come out.

Re: the stains.  Poop will stain.  If they don't smell of poop then they are clean.  Even if stained.  So just sun the stains.  If they do smell of poop then it's not that the inserts aren't coming out that keeps them from getting clean, it's something in the wash cycle.  Although your wash cycle sounds good.

And FWIW I don't unstuff any pockets - BGs, FuzziBunz, Rumparooz and Happy Heinys - they all come unstuffed in the wash and always have.  I really think more water faster agitation is the ticket.

  • We've always pulled out the inserts manually. I've never read they fall out on their own. We also spray down the poopies and some of the extra heavy pee's. It helps keep them looking newer by reducing staining.

    Our washing procedure these days:

    1. cold wash (w/ soap and vinegar), sometimes extra rinse

    2. warm wash (w/ soap and vinegar)

Every once in a while one won't come out and they are always clean. I wonder if it's our washers?

This is what we do.  We even have Thirsties duos w/ openings on both ends for the inserts and we still pull them out manually.

  • We have always pulled inserts out of bum genius before washing. I do it as soon as I take the diaper off, before it goes in the diaper pail. Usually I just shake it into the pail so I don't have to touch it. If the diaper is poopy we rinse it in the toilet before it goes in the diaper pail. Our wash the same as yours otherwise. Sometimes if it is a really full load I will do a 2nd extra rinse just to make sure they are completely rinsed.
  • I know I'm jumping in late here but from lurking heavily on EFF, I think the only pockets you don't have to manually take out the inserts are ones with openings on both sides like Thirsties. I always take the inserts out of our BGs myself. Your wash sounds good. Rockin Green detergent is awesome.

  • The inserts don't come out in our HE washer.  We do cold rinse/spin, and then hot wash with an extra wash and extra rinse, highest soil level (or you can add an old towel to increase the water level)  1 T Rocking Green (or 1.5 tsp of Allen's).

  • I always pulled out the inserts.  I think BG will need that.

The stains are just stains.  Like if you spill koolaid on your shirt, it's stained, but it's still clean.  I never worried about the stains.  They'll fade over time.  If you really want to get them out, you can dry them in the sun and the sun will bleach them.

  • We remove the inserts. How often do you wash them? If the poopie ones sit for a couple of days it is harder to get the stain out, but most of the time it comes right out after washing. That said I wash mine every other or 2 days and I've never had anything stain.

We do a cold rinse, then hot was with 2 cold rinses, and detergent is Purex free and clear. I also add bleach every few weeks to a load.

  • Thanks for all the tips!!  I plan on washing them every other day, and we have started taking the inserts out.  I bought a detergent recommended on the "polkadots and whatever" webpage...Sun free and clear...but I'm not sure if its HE safe...ugh.  So maybe I will look into the detergent that a bunch of you recommended!  Thanks!
