I failed at my first sewing project. :-(

...well, I succeeded in threading the machine, so that was a thrill.  I tried to use a placemat pattern thinking it would be the simplest.  Not so.  The directions used words like "gimp" and "baste."  WTH?

Anyhoo, I tried my best and made an ugly placemat out of fleece and felt so that my cats would have something snuggly to sleep on all day long.  My cats are grateful, but I'd like to try something else.  Can anyone recommend a brand of patterns that has well written directions?  Or, better yet, a website with easy, printable patterns?  I am googling, but thought I'd ask anyway.

  • You could always make a blanket, but that is just straight stitching. What about curtains?

  • I'm with you on the cryptic language. that's why I HATE patterns. I usually wing it and do stuff myself. I have finally mastered curtains and have done kitchen cafe curtains, a shower curtain and nursery curtains for a friend. my next attempt will be *gasp* cloth diapers..I'm scared of that one...
  • What a stinker :(

I don't know what those terms mean either!

I'm working on cloth pad liners. They're NOT easy!

  • I'd stick with fabrics that aren't stretchy (like fleece is) for your next couple of projects.

hmmm...  lol.  i'm a big fan of "tell it like it is" in patterns and instructions - no need for strange and obscure terms!  Stick out tongue

  • What type of pattern was it?  I have no suggestions on websites, or easy to read patterns either.  I've been sewing since I was little, so it's hard for me to pick out an easy pattern (if that makes sense).  There are a few that I super confusing (and I can't think of the company off the top of my head).  I am sure there is a great website out there that has the terminology...baste I know, the other one I've never heard of :)

GL!, and if I think of anything (the brain is mush today) I'll let you know!

  • You might want to check out https://www.craftster.org/ I know they have tons of tutorials for simple stuff without patterns in the Clothing section. And people are usually pretty good at answering questions.
