Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What's the big deal about birthday cake?

I keep hearing about people making a special "healthy" birthday cake for their LO, with yogurt instead of frosting, etc.  Is this really necessary?  Are babies not allowed to have cake?  Of course, we wouldn't give it to our kids every day, but for a special occasion like a birthday, is it okay to just give them normal cake, or is there some ingredient I don't know about that is really bad for them?

  • We just limit the amount of sugar DD gets that's why we're making a carrot cake with less sugar (and possible applesauce in it). I don't want her to get sick...

  • My dentist had told me that if you take a child until the age of 3 and not give them any of the bad sugars, that all of the good sugars will colonize the whole mouth and there will be no room for the bad to grow.  Maybe this is some of the reasonings for healthy cakes?

  • I don't get it either. DD will be having regular ol' birthday cake. It's not like once she turns a year old, I'm going to give her cake for breakfast everyday. The thought of doing a "healthy" bday cake never would've even crossed my mind & the only reason I've heard of people doing this is from TB.

  • LOL.  I don't know why, but this is one my biggest pet peeves.  It's a birthday, it's cake, it's GOOD.  My kid will have a real birthday cake.

(And they only get about 3 bites in, anyway....)

  • Why? ...because some of us don't want to give our baby a lot of sugar.   I'm not a health nut...I like a good old slice of cake now and then and I'll let her have regular cake when she's older...but just not at a year old.  She's never had anything with a lot of sugar so she doesn't know what she's missing, plus I don't want to deal with a 1 year old and a sugar crash.  There's nothing wrong with sticking to a healthier version of a cake.

This. I think things are fine in moderation and I think its silly to impose "healthy" cake on everyone at the party, because I certainly am not making a whole separate batch of healthy cupcakes for LO. Besides, no one at our party will want healthy cupcakes : )

  • He's getting a regular cake (Publix gives you a smash cake for free if you order a regular cake from there). I suspect most of it will wind up on him or the floor. I never give him sweets so I'm really not worried about there being any kind of long-term health issue from one day.

  • To each their own. If they want to make a healthy cake, good for them. DD will have a piece of regular, sugar laden birthday cake.

I feel the same way. ?She eats uber healthy every other day so I am going to let her have her own cupcake cake on her first b day. If others want to make a special healthy cake for their kid more power to them. ??

  • Yeah our DD will be having regular birthday cake too. It's not like she's going to eat a lot. Whatever she can get in her mouth from her smash cake, I'm sure won't be a lot.
  • My baby barely eats solids. I just can't imagine giving him a big pile of sugar and having it go well.
