3rd Trimester

Baby's est. weight at 34 weeks??

What was it?  I know it is only an estimate, but this time around my LO is measuring 4 1/2 pounds which the tech says is beginning to fall off of the charts.  My DD was born at 34 weeks and weighed 5lb 6 oz...although I was on hospital bedrest with steroid injections then...My husband is concerned that I am not eating healthy enough or something and it is my fault.

Re: Baby's est. weight at 34 weeks??

  • I had a growth u/s a few days ago and my LO was 5lbs 4oz (just an estimate) She said he was measuring about a week and a half ahead and is in the 51st percentile.

Your baby is a tad on the smaller side, but doesn't seem "off the charts" by any means. I'd talk to your Dr about it.

Check this out. Your LO is totally average for 34 weeks.

    I just have a monster child :)

Your husband really thinks it's your fault? That's nice.

  • It doesn't seem that off.  I had a growth ultrasound yesterday at 35 weeks and LO was measuring 4 lb 12 oz. and my Dr. was not concerned.

  • I know people who have had growth U/S be off by pounds, don't sweat it...

My LO weighed in at about 5 lbs, 2 oz and the U/S tech said she was checking in about 34wks, but babies are all different.

  • At like 30 weeks my LO was 4 pounds 10 ounces, but they are saying he is measuring big soo...
  • At my 34 wk u/s LO was measuring 5lb 3oz. Dr said that was about average. Like pp, I read that between 4 and 5 is normal for 34 weeks. Which direction did the tech think it was falling off the charts - too big or too little? Sounds just right to me...

  • All the things I have read say 4-5 pounds is average for that time frame.

I am totally jealous of all of you with later ultrasounds. We havent had one since 23 weeks and none scheduled :( Ugh.

Don't be jealous of me.  My amniotic fluid index is low.

  • Tell your DH and that tech to go F themselves...j/k Even if he is small(which according to every chart I've seen, he's not) the tech shouldn't be telling you stuff like that. Their job is to turn the info over to the radiologist and/or your dr. and have them interpret it for you. Babies grow at different rates. They don't always go by the book. He could have a huge growth spurt and be bigger than average by next week, just like someone can have a 5lb 32 week baby that is delivered at normal birthweight. U/S isn't always accurate. It can be off by a pound either way. Its like someone trying to weigh you in a bathtub full of water.
  • Your husband shouldn't be telling you anything is your fault - but are you eating enough and eating healthy foods?

  • First off, ultrasounds can and are USUALLY wayyyyyy off. With my oldest daughter, I had an U/S at 40 weeks and 1 day- 2 days before I went into labor. They said she was easily over 8 pounds with a very large head. I really had to do some soul searching to decide whether to do a c-section. I decided against it. She ended up being 6 pounds 5 ounces.

What does this mean to you? Your baby could be 1 pound bigger RIGHT NOW and you dont even know it. There is NO WAY to determine how much your baby weighs- even when the doctor measures it with tape- every belly is different and no one knows what is BABY vs. your body, vs. fluid.

    relax.
