I am returning to my old job teaching HS English at the end of the summer! Gah! The whole thing makes me crazy!
I was looking at one of my colleague's websites, and he has a whole section about this issue. He gives an example of how NOT to communicate with your teacher, and it's all in "kid-text speak." Really funny. I will probably borrow that idea when I set up my own website.
I'm FB "friends" with my nephew, who is going into 8th grade, and I have to really steel myself not to correct his messed up spelling in every.single.post. Some of his creative spellings are obviously intentional, others are words he probably just doesn't know how to spell.
I feel that schools have really dropped the ball with spelling instruction in the last 10 years. My DD is 9 and reads on a high school reading level, but can't spell some of the most basic words. We live in a county that's often touted as having one of the best public school systems in the country. Yet, the spelling curriculum in elementary school has been spotty and random. I guess, as a nation, we're planning on relying on spell check!
