Success after IF

Beta 2 wks post-m/c = 4. Now what?

Had a beta done yesterday and the result was 4.  I was kind of surprised it wasn't 0, even though I know it can take a while to get that low.  But I only bled for 3 days and I have already ovulated (or am now).

Anyway...I know they'll probably have me come in again at some point for another beta.  Why do we need to make sure it's 0?  If I get AF in a few weeks, why can't we just do an IUI that cycle?  Why do we need to continue monitoring HCG levels?

Sorry if I sound ignorant.

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).

  • personally I would skip any future betas.

any thoughts to meds & monitoring next cycle, or are you going to keep with your same protocol?

so, there's really no point to the betas?

we're going to do the same protocol this time...if it doesn't work out, we may very well rethink things next time around.

  • I believe that if you were stuck in a higher range of numbers, that could indicate something is not leaving, like a molar pregnancy, tubal, etc. but stuck at 4 for a while? no big whoop. Of course, I don't know that for sure and perhaps there is a whole other reason 4 is not good enough, it has to be 0?  ironically, anything >3 is negative.

  • At my office anything less than 5 is considered negative.  I've heard 3 and 5.

  • I never had my betas checked after my miscarriages.  My doctor told me to wait until I had one normal period and then I could start trying again.  By most standards, 4 would be considered negative anyway so I wouldn't even bother with getting another done.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I am not sure if you read my blog about mine that went from 17 to 2 in two weeks.  I am not srue if I had one after 2.  I think they were fine with that and I got pg on the next cycle (but it was a break cycle and something you can't do).  :(  i think once they get 4, you shouldn't need anymore
