Pump suction is inconsistent

I have a medela pump and it usually works really well.  However, about every 3rd time I turn it on, the suction is not at full power - usually barely enough to move my nipples in and out in the cups.

I have to turn the pump off, take the pieces apart and put them back together, then try again.  Usually by the 3rd try it works again.

Is this a common problem?  What could be causing it?
