Ugh.. mold in sippy cup spout

Awhile back, we noticed that our sippy cups were stinky. We always air dry them, and used to store them with the lids on, but stopped doing that, thinking that water was getting trapped inside and that was what was making them stink.

Last night I was putting away some cups, and noticed something black in the hole in one of the spouts. I figured it was food from the dishwasher, so I tried to get it out with a toothpick. I realized it wasn't coming out so I pulled out the valve thing. It was FULL of black mold. I was so grossed out. I know Holly used this cup within the past week or so, and I am just sick to think she was drinking that. We typically only use sippies when we're out and about since we're trying ot have Holly use an open cup at home. So who knows how long it's been like that, or how long it's been sitting there with mold in it.

I pulled out all of her cups and none of them were as bad as that one, but some had water trapped between the valvue and the spout, and some smelled bad. I took them all apart, soaked them in vinegar, then boiling water, then sat out to air dry, disassembled. I think we'll probably stick to the take & toss ones or other ones without spill-proof valves from now on because I just can't handle the idea of my kid drinking mold.

Anyone else dealt with this? Just thought I'd post it as a PSA, if nothing else. :-(

Re: Ugh.. mold in sippy cup spout

  • Oh no! At least you don't use them often. We have many no spill cups but I haven't had that problem. We always remove the valve to wash them and let everything air dry. And I try to run them through the dishwasher that way about once a week.

  • Yeah, for whatever reason, it had never occurred to me to take them apart (Duh.) But still, I think we won't be using them as much anymore. Sad

  • It is easy to happen, we have dissassembled them each time they go in the dishwasher to make sure nothing grows in there. Then I guess the heat dries them in the DW.

I havent had a problem with them doing that. We use the straw sippies so I know its a few more parts but it works. Good for you with the open cup....I just cant do it yet. I dont want the mess.

  • We use straw sippies and it happens to ours all the time.  I got a straw cleaner and that helps a lot.

  • It's definitely easy enough to have happen!  When DH unloads the dishwasher and puts the sippies together, I notice condensation on the cups.  I always take them apart again and let them air dry.  He never understood why I was so anal about this.  I have noticed on some of his bottles the dishwasher wouldn't get them clean and we would get a moldy spot.  It was so gross!  I would hand wash it, and then put it back in the dishwasher.  Things happen.

  • That happened to us  too :(. It was SO GROSS. I've noticed that it only happened in her Playtex  My First Sipsters (the smaller ones with handles). Her tall, handle free Playtex cups have never had that problem (and believe me, I check them every.single.time now). We threw out all of the First Sipsters and just use the big cups or take and toss now.

  • Don't feel bad.  The same thing happened to me, except that I didn't figure it out on my own.  My MIL pointed it out, which was exceptionally embarrassing to say the least.  I normally take it all apart and throw it all into those dishwasher baskets and them let them dry b/f I put them together.  I skipped doing that a few times b/c we were on vacation and rushed, but she spotted some mold so now I will always take it apart b/f we wash them.

THIS.  We had that problem at the very first, then since I've always had to take them apart. they go through the dishwasher taken apart after each day.

  • I hand wash all my sippys with that valve and take them apart and air dry, the valve part always has milk bits and that is why I noticed to start taking it out and really washing it well. I did find mold in one of my cups and it is gross. We switched to the insulated playtex sipster ones and so far haven't had any issues.
