Playpen vs Bassinet?

We are just starting our registry and I have a question for you moms out there. We were going to get a bassinet for the baby to sleep in our room at first, but now we are thinking the playpen with the bassinet option. When we talked to one of the ladies at the store, she said they really aren't meant for sleeping in and really aren't that safe.
Since I am pretty much a clueless wonder on this  I would appreciate any advice.

Re: Playpen vs Bassinet?

  • They have napper attachments but the play yard itself is not made for sleeping. The tend to dip a little in the center and can suffocate them. I know plenty of people that let their babies sleep in them but it's not worth the risk to me.

  • Like a pack and play?  We've only used ours for sleeping.  The baby slept on the top level when they were infants and then in the main part until about 18 months.

  • We used our pack-n-play with the top "bassinett" thing attached. I didnt' want to buy a bunch of items that could serve the same purpose. We moved her to her own crib when she was 2.5-3 months old so it worked well for the short term. We will do the same with this LO.
  • We used the pack n play for the first 2 months then moved her to her crib.  It worked great for us.  Bassinets can be expensive and you only use it for such a short amount time. I would save your expensive items for things you will use in the long run. GL

  • We used the Graco travel lite pack n play for dd. It had the bassinet feature. She slept in that for 4 weeks and we took it with us when we traveled for the first year.  We had a regular pac n play in the living room, which had a changing table and bassinet feature. We plan to do this again with new baby.
  • We kept the pack n play w/ bassinet in our living room for the first few months. I used it as a changing table (instead of going upstairs every time.) And DD took her day time naps there instead of upstairs. I loved having it!

  • Is a play yard the same as a pack and play? I'm pretty sure our kid isn't going to suffocate by sleeping in one.... I've never in any of my research/reading/experiences heard of that.
