Benadryl for a Rash?

LO has a rash.  It's most intense on his face and head, but seems to be in spots all over.  I'm not sure if it's heat rash or if it's an allergy.  We tried tofu for the first time yesterday.  He was only in the heat (although it was really hot and humid) for about 30 minutes.

He also seems to be rubbing at his eyes a lot.

I'm wondering whether or not to give him infant benadryl.  If it is food related, would that help the rash go away?

  • I would call a doctor.
  • Call the doctor! ?It sounds like an allergic reaction to me. Your scalp is the first thing to get itchy when you have an allergic reaction. ?

Maybe I'm underreacting,  but I'm not sure why there is a need to call the dr.  The tofu was given yesterday and I won't give him anymore.  He's not having trouble breathing or any severe reactions, so I'm pretty sure the dr would tell me to stop giving him tofu and see if the benadryl helps
  • Why not ask the doctor? It can't hurt.

I would have to make an appointment.  Drs here don't do phone consults

  • If it's an allergic reaction Benadryl should help.
  • That sucks, my doctor always calls me back or has a nurse do it.

  • Like the other said, call the doc.  DS had a rash a few months ago.  We still don't know what caused it - it wasn't supposed to be contagious, but several kids in his class had it and some friends kids got it.  He didn't itch, but they did tell us to do 1/2 t of benadryl.

I would not have done that without their blessing.

Yeah, it sucks, but give and take, right?  We have a great healthcare system, so this is one of those little annoyances.  We do have free helplines to talk to RNs, but since my nurse already told me how much Benadryl to give should he need it, I'm not worried.

  • Sounds like what my son has, baby eczema.  Doc said not to use benedryl, but hydrocortosine cream (we have prescription 2% for body, otc 1% for face).
