3rd Trimester

Cervix is soft, what does this mean?

I had my 36 week appt today and Group B test. the doctor checked me for the first time and said the baby is "extrememly low". She said my cervix was still very high but "very soft". I feel like the baby has dropped, as I've had a lot more pressure in my pelvis and having been peeing way more. I know it's extremely difficult to predict, but does it mean that labor is still very far away because my cervix is still high, or is it good that it's very soft? Does that indicate labor could be getting close? I'm not sure what to think, as with my first son, it was completely high and close/hard until my water broke, and then I needed pitocin. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Ladies!

Re: Cervix is soft, what does this mean?

  • Your cervix has to soften before it can dilate, so yeah its a step in the right direction, but does not necessarily mean labor is right around the corner, especially since it's still high :)  Maybe since you are making changes earlier this time you wont need the pitocin.

  • As the end of pregnancy nears, the cervix normally becomes soft (ripe) and begins to open (dilate) and thin (efface), preparing for labor and delivery.

since you are still high I would guess it will be awhile....2nd pregnancies you tend to soften and dilate sooner but you can walk around at 3-4cm for weeks...

    hope this helps

  • Thanks so much for the info! I kind of figured that it could still be a while, but am encouraged that I have made more progress than I did on my own last time. Hopefully it will continue this way! Thanks again!
