Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Does your baby hate baby food?

I'm just curious. DD eats a ounce of baby food once a day. We struggle with it. She will not even open her mouth for me. She makes a horrified face and we have tried every single stage one food I could think of. We started playing around with solids a month and two weeks ago. I thought she would have liked something by now. How many times does your LO eat baby food a day?

Re: Does your baby hate baby food?

  • She's still pretty young, and it can take up to 10 tries before a baby likes a specific food. She's probably still in the process of getting the hang of it. I'd just give her more time, and stick with the same food for a while to see if that helps.

  • Is she interested in what you have?  You could try giving her some things to play with/ eat and see if she likes it better when she does it for herself.

  • My DD wasn't a huge fan the first few days, but now she opens her mouth wide and sometimes cries when the food is gone.  She seemed to take a liking to carrots immediately taking a little longer to really want some of the other veggies.  We haven't done a lot of fruits yet, but will be starting those next week.

She currently has cereal mixed with formula in the am, then a veggie in the evening.  (2 times a day for solids)

It's been month in a half since we started. I just hope she eventually likes it.

Does she like cereal?  If she does, have you tried mixing that?  I did that a few times at the beginning.  Also, do you have a mesh feeder?  DD likes to eat anything I put in it.  I think she thinks it is a toy and it is fun to put it in her mouth.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, my pedi said all the solid feeding is just practice right now since they get the majority of their nutrients from breastmilk or formula.  In other words, don't stress and give your LO time.

  • How long did it take for your LO's to get used to baby food? It just seems like a month and two weeks is a long time to still not be used to it.

Yea, We started first with the rice cereal. She has the mesh feeder. I know that it's just practice for now and that she gets everything she needs from formula. I just was concerned because she hates it so much.

  • We started on oatmeal with a spoon 2+ weeks ago ... he isn't overly excited with it and I have to pretend the spoon is an airplane and make a  big show to get him to finish it.  I have been giving him 3 measured tsp of the oatmeal, mixed with his formula - not sure the total oz.  Tomorrow at his 6 month check-up I suspect the Pedi will say to go ahead and start the veggies... hoping to have better luck.

The only other thing I can think of is the time of day you are feeding her.  Is she hungry?  Overly hungry?  Just some thoughts to maybe try another time of day.  It is weird that she hates it.  It only took about a week for DD to be really excited about solids.  I know it is hard not to stress though.

  • We tried food with DD at just after 4 months, and it was a big fat fail. She was completely uninterested, and would literally seal her lips shut against it. I tried again when she was around 6 months, and she loved it. Your LO just may not be ready for food yet.
  • We waited until he was 6 months old and skipped rice cereal. and started with homemade carrots  That was a mistake.  I think they weren't thin enough and he got these big huge tears in his eyes and made the saddest face EVER.  It took a few weeks before he started to like foods.  Now I give him rice cereal with a fruit mixed in in the a.m. and a veggie/fruit in the evening.  I try to be unusual with my combos - I made green beans and apples, or cherries, bananas and blueberries - something to get him trying different flavors.

  • It seems like you started solids somewhat early, so it may just be that she's not really ready for them yet. Even at 6 months, some babies just aren't interested. I'd just take it slow and don't force them. Keep letting her try some solids on occasion and see if waiting it out will help her to develop a liking for them.
  • As PP said, don't worry too much because solids at this point are just practice. I have to remind myself of this constantly so that I don't become discouraged.

We started solids at 6 months, and DD is not very interested in anything I try to give her. She is over 7 months now. She has never been a good eater though, even with her breast milk.

I'm trying to just follow her cues right now. I was really hoping that she would love to eat her solids but no such luck yet. Hang in there! :)

  • I agree with PPs that your DD prob just wasn't ready to start solids at 4.5 mo.  Now that she's 6 mo I think you'll have more luck.  My DD wasn't interested in cereal at all at 4-5 mo.  When she was 6 mo we tried again and she never really took to the cereal but we slowly started having luck with veggies and fruits. I fed her in her jumperoo so she was distracted with the toys and I sneak in a bite here and there.  Then once she got the hang of it we transitioned to the high chair and she's been a great eater ever since.  GL!

  • He eats 3x a day and will eat (almost) anything we give him - but he doesn't seem to love anything yet.
