Pumping question, breast shield size?

I bought the Medela Pump In Style and tried to use it this morning.  Nothing came out.  I can tell that the shield is too big.  Would that make it not work?  The booklet says "for comfortable pumping" you need the correct size.  But I am wondering if that's why it didn't work.
