Need Advice: Traveling with a toddler

We have been seriously thinking about taking a trip to CA and WA to visit my family, but I am so apprehensive since I have a very active LO who I think would hate being stuck in a seat for the 5 hour flight from HI, not to mention the multiple flights we would be taking. Anyway, is there some way to get through this or should we just anticipate on it being difficult. Should we wait till she's a little older? One of the big reasons I want to go soon is that it is really important to me that Wai see my grandmothers while they're still with us. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

I don't have a toddler but I'll try to help. Once you are in the sky and they give the ok you can get up and move around, I would walk with her down the aisles. I've seen moms do this and it's worked well for LO's. Bella will sit and play with noisy toys for a bit and she LOVES hard back touch and feel books so I'd take toys and plenty of snacks too!

  • You can do it!  If you can, get seats in the bulk head and put her in the window seat...then, once the plane is at cruising altitude you can put a blanket on the floor infront of your feet and let her play on the floor with some quiet toys.  Books are good too.  Some parents also let their kids watch videos on a portable DVD or their laptop.  You might figure that she'll be so distracted by the plane and passengers that'll kill at least an hour right there.  And maybe you'll get lucky and she'll sleep a couple of hours.  If you time it right, you can tire her out in the airport (let her run around in a safe area...some airports have little playgrounds, etc.) and burn off some energy so that when it's time to board she's settled down a bit.
  • Thanks Sarah & Lori! I needed to hear those things! Looking forward to making plans for our first family trip.
