Babies: 3 - 6 Months

My FFFC

I hate that my parents (they're in town for the next month, staying with us) keep trying to bundle up DD in a blanket and get mad at me when I don't have a blanket over her legs when she's asleep. It is about 80 degrees outside and we don't have the a/c turned up very high.

I also hate that everyone keeps commenting on DD's complexion. Yes, she's a mixed baby- I'm brown and DH is white. Does it really matter that much what colour my baby ends up?

  • I agree w you 100% on the complexion thing.  Me and DH are both light skinned Black people, but LO is lighter than both of us.  I always get, "Do you think she's going to get any darker?" or "She's so light".  So the F what?!?!?!  Yeah, she'll get darker when you become smarter!!!!!

  • The complexion thing bothers me too...but DS is really fair skinned. DH has light skin that burns easily and I'm fairly light, but tan very well. Everyone always says "Has he ever been outside?!" or "You need some sunscreen" or "He's gonna need like 1000 SPF". It's annoying.

I don't understand how people think it is okay to say things like that! Would you love LO is he/she was a different skin tone from you and DH? I don't think so.

RIGHT!!!!!!!  And why is it any of your busines anyway?!?!?  Being pregnant and now having an infant just solidifies the fact that people are stupid.

  • My husband is brown and I am white. My MIL is so annoying with the skin colour thing!!!! She is DYING for my DS to be brown!!! Well, I'm sorry lady but my genes are apparently more dominant there and he is light skinned!!!  She always makes comments about how every part of him is from there side of the family except for him being "white". Well, I got news for ya lady, my family has tall family members and my family has big feet and long fingers. Ugh, she's just so annoying! Sorry, this turned into a vent!

  • I understand the frustration.  I actually get it the other way from my MIL.  My nieces are all mixed race, so they are naturally darker than DS.  My MIL comments about how pale white DS is EVERY SINGLE TIME we see her.  You'd think she'd remember what a white baby looks like since DH is just as pale. LOL  The black half of our nieces comes from DH's BIL.

It's hard not to laugh at it but geez it gets annoying - probably because I'm sensitive about always being called pale since I don't tan either!  I just don't think people have tact when it comes to varying skin colors as they as they don't consider it a "racial" comment.
