Poll: Careers?

I guess you can tell I have my mind on the future! Don't think I want DD to grow up too quickly, my mind is just on a roll.

You know how actors and actresses get asked "will LO get into acting someday?" Would you like for LO to follow in your career/college footsteps or not at all? Please describe what you and DH/SO do. OBVIOUSLY we will all support LO's choices in the future!!! Big Smile

Well, I tend to think that my girls will be creative, my mom is, I am. I think it's one of those things that's easy to start kids on as a young age, so they may develop a liking for it later for a career. Will DD be a photographer? When I wasn't SAH I was a teacher. If DS says he is going to college to be a teacher, I will literally throw myself on the ground and have a hissy fit. I will support any choice he makes, but I would seriously be upset. It is not worth it! I don't want him to have to go through what teachers go through.

DH is an electrical engineer. I would completely support that decision. Although I would be honest with DS about what DH went through when he was first starting out and tell him how much he had to work in order to get where he is now. He worked long hours and traveled a ton at first.

I am a teacher, and I think it is a great career. I get to work and be home a lot with DD. DH is in business, and I think that is a great career as well. He gets to travel. He just wished he could be home more and earlier(sometimes has to work Saturdays). We both hope LOs will go to better colleges than we did. We did fine, but we both changed schools a lot and always felt like commuters to our schools instead of feeling a part of the student body.

This exactly! Teaching has gotten worse each year since I started 10 years ago. I'm ready for a new career. I would probably persuade my kids to explore some jobs that are less stressful and better paying.

DH and I are both doctors - I "graduate" from my residency in September and DH in June. While we both love what we do, we have sacrificed so much over the last 7 years. Everyone has this misconception that doctors make a crap ton of money, but that is far from the truth (especially for young doctors like us who are just starting out). Between paying for malpractice insurance, repaying our massive student loan debt, praying that you don't get sued and the insurance reimbursements that keep getting smaller, it's definitely not something to go into for the money. I wouldn't discouraged any of them, but I wouldn't want them to be doctors just because we are.

DD can be whatever she wants to be, the only thing I will push is for her to really follow her dreams and not "give up." I always wanted to be a sports writer. I covered Mens Division I basketball and soccer for my college newspaper and l loved it. I have a degree in journalism and instead of pursuing it and trying to find a job in that world I didn't. It was hard and I couldn't find anything and having a family was more important. I wish I had tried a little harder and found a way to do both. Oh well, too late now.

I am one to say it is NEVER too late. You should still try for your dreams and show your little girl how important it is to follow them

I am a lawyer practicing family law, DH is a certified financial planner. If DD wants to be a lawyer when she grows up that is fine by me, I will probably push her into a different area of law, but if she has the hard skin like her mama, she may be able to handle this area. If she is great with numbers though she may be like her daddy (well her mom is good with them too) and get into financial planning. But like the poster above said about Dr.'s, if they want to get into it just for the money (either career) I will tell her not to and to follow her dreams. The massive student loan debt and stress of the job just isn't necessarily worth the money (that honestly you won't make until you've been practicing for a few years or so anyway).

I don't know if I want my LO to do what I do because I hate it but if he likes it then that wll be up to him... I am an adjudicator for social security disability... My DH does traffic control (he basically does lane closures, puts up no parking signs, flags, etc) he actually makes good money doing it... I don't have any expectations of what I want my children's career choices to be, just as long as they are happy and they love doing what they do, because I hate what I do and I am trying to find something I love doing...

I dunno... DH and I are both physicians. I certainly won't put any pressure on LO to follow in our footsteps. It certainly was a lot of work and very demanding - emotionally and physically.

I kinda feel like it is hard to be a good mommy/wife and a good doctor - although I would probably feel that way about any career at this point.

I just hope he finds a job that makes him happy
