3rd Trimester

Anyone had sharp pain where placenta is attached?

I was laying down and reached across my body to grab something.  I felt this sudden, horribly sharp pain at the top of my uterus.  I know my placenta is attached there (got in a car accident a few weeks ago and was checked for a placental abruption then).  The pain slowly subsided and it's just a little tender to the touch now.  I'm not bleeding and the baby has moved a few times.  I know if I call, I'll be told to come in for monitoring but I also hate to overreact.  Has anyone had anything similar?  TIA!

Re: Anyone had sharp pain where placenta is attached?

  • The placenta tends to move as the uterus grows, so chances are it's not in the same place that it was a few weeks ago, so they may be totally unrelated. I would keep an eye on the baby's movement and any bleeding whatsoever, but chances are that it was just a pulled muscle.

  • Does it hurt more when you take deep breaths?  I actually went to the ER for something that sounds similar the other day...  turned out to be nothing more than a pulled muscle from endless lifting of my heavy 15 month old.
  • No.  Hurts a little more when I have a contraction though (unrelated... I've been having regular contractions since 24 weeks... the joys of an irritable uterus).
  • I have something similar sporadically I think. Feels like a sharp twinge a few inches above my belly button. My doc said it's just a muscle twinge. Pretty much that the muscle gets ticked after repeated rubbing or hitting from baby.
