So we leave for Yellowstone on Saturday morning and did you ladies hear that there was a bear attack? 2 injured and 1 dead. This is the second bear attach and 3rd animal attack this summer. Very odd and not normal for YS animals. BUT an animal is stil an animal and they hunt...period.
We are tent camping and now I am scared shiitless.DH wants to take a gun but I don't want him to. I'm buying two cans of bear spray tonight.
P.S. They believe they have caught the bear who attacked. She was a mamma bear and had her two cubs with her. Makes me think about what a momma will do for her babies. So sad for the loss of the life-just terrible!
Re: Yellowstone...aaahhhh (me screaming/vent)
Yikes. I'm sorry because this is totally a serious post and I would be really freaked out too... but I just giggled out loud at "bear spray."

Yes, I did take note of her playing dead, she said she could feel the bear's jaw loosen as soon as she played dead. So crazy!
Bear spray is like mace on crack! It's about to become illegal to sell in stores b/c people are using it on other people
when I was a kid we were driving there to camp. The night before we arrived 2 guys were pulled out of their tents while they slept (well, I'm sure they woke up) and eaten by a bear. They hadn't changed their clothes after BBQing earlier that evening.
We weren't allowed to camp when we arrived and had to find a hotel - which I was happy about because they had a pool!

Me too!! And I had to google it to make sure it was real.
In all seriousness tho, I do hope you have a safe trip. I would be freaked out as well.
I used to be a National Park Ranger, and one of my co-workers had been a Ranger at Yellowstone for years. He said that 90% of the animal attacks in the park are caused by human stupidity - trying to pet a bison, getting close enough to bear cubs to get good pictures, etc. As long as you remember to keep your respectful distance you should be fine.
If your husband does bring his gun, remember that it is not legal to bring a gun into a federal building, including visitor centers, ranger stations, museums, or even restrooms.
Maven you are 110% correct about most accidents being human stupidity! We are goig with DH's parents and they are staying in a cabin and will be keeping the food in their car. DH and I will not have ANY food at all with us in our tent/packs-just water. DH and I have an enormous respect for nature and animals and appreciate their territory. He has been 4 times and this is my first. Very excited!
Yellowstone just passed a law earlier this year (I think in Feb) that allows you to have a gun as long as it's not concealed. I don't think he'll really bring a gun...he's just trying to sound tough or make me feel safe. I read on the internet this morning that with bear spray, you have a 98% chance of survival and with a bullet only 50% chance. The last thing we would want to do is to kill/shoot an animal. But if it's our lives or theirs...well I'm sure you understand
