Don't get me wrong, I really like my OB, she is awesome but every time I have an appointment at her office this issue grosses me out.
At my first appointment, the nurse told me they do a urine sample at every appointment and gave me a little pee cup to take home with me. She said that they like to save time by giving you the cup to take home with you so that you can bring it back with a sample already in it and you can give it directly to them so they don't have to wait for you to do your thing in the washroom. I was like "Uhh, ok..." At the end of every appointment they give you a new cup in preparation for your next appointment.
When I went back for my second appointment I brought the cup with me but hadn't peed in it yet. When I was waiting in the waiting room I asked the girl at the desk if I could use their washroom and I had the cup in my hands and she said "Sure, just keep the sample with you when you come back into the waiting room until the nurse comes to get you for your appointment".
Uh, no thanks. I'm not holding it in my hand while sitting in the waiting room for everyone to see my pee, and I am certainly not putting it in my purse to potentially leak in my purse.
I left it in the bathroom, and every appointment I've had since, I continue to leave it in the bathroom and I tell the nurse where it is.
I don't see what the big deal is about wanting to save time that badly. I always sit in the room waiting for the doctor for about 10 minutes, I could go to the bathroom then and pee in a cup... but whatever.
Re: I find this pretty gross about my OB's office.
That's kind of weird. It takes like 2 seconds and the PA just goes to her desk until I'm done, then she escorts me to an exam room.
Is anyone else sitting in the waiting room holding their pee??
*scratches head*
Yeah, that IS weird. And gross. Like, how much time are they really saving here? Two and half minutes?
I'm with you. I'd just leave the sample in the bathroom. Grody to the max.
This is what all my doctors do...

Not that I can see!! Every time I am sitting in the waiting room I am thinking "How many girl in this room have a cup of pee in their purse??" I've never seen anyone hold it in their hands so....
This is me too. I've never heard of having to pee BEFORE you get to the doctor's office. B/c it takes a whole 2 mins of your 15 min wait time?
This!
Ha! Twin valley-girl quotes! Tubular!
That's pretty normal usually for urine samples. I close the lid of the cup and rinse the outside and cover it with paper towel if I have to sit with it.
At my midwife clinic they have the little cups (like paper drinking cups) AND the pee sticks in the washroom so you just go in and pee on the stick and if the colours are in the normal range, just toss it and if not, bring it in and show it to her.
That is just plain weird and not to mention not even right! I would tell them that I am not carrying around my pee for them.
At every doctors appointment they have me use the restroom and leave a sample for them in a cup on the little counter in there.... and I think this is weird. I have always seen the little rotating windows, but they don't have that. They just want you to leave it on the counter. It makes me very nervouse that someone else is going to walk in there to use the restroom and my pee cup is still going to be sitting there, because it does take some time for my nurse to come grab it.

My Ob has the window in the bathroom system.
However, as a young child, I have vivid memories of my mother having to get my bro and I to pee in cups to bring urine samples for our yearly phsyicals. Apparently it's difficult to get a child to pee on command at the doctor's office, so they asked the parents to collect it at home. My mother would save two small glass jam jars or such and put our samples in those every year and carry them with her in her purse to our appointment. (Bro and I have b-days the day before each other so our physicals were always done on the same day.)

Both of the OB offices I've been to for my pregnancies have done this. Wrap it in a paper towel and close it tight. It's not gonna leak. It's just pee. Get over it.
When your baby comes, there will be much grosser things to worry about.
This is what I do too... and now I will never again be annoyed by having to pee when I go.
I would be more grossed out being a person in the waiting room sitting across from someone holding a cup of their own pee.
Unable to even.

This exactly.
That IS gross - even though pee is sterile
I have to leave a sample every time I go to the Dr. but I use their restroom, and they have a little window where I leave it and just tell the gals on the other side of the window I'm done. Super easy and I do it usually before my appointment or right after. Whenever it works for me to go.
My OB's office has you bring in a sample. I'm sure if it bothered someone that much they could do it when they get there. Personally I'm not bothered by it after all it is my urine.
For the ones that leave in the bathroom: Are you writing your name on the sample so it doesn't get mixed up with someone else's sample?
At my office, the lab tech prepares the cup for you (writes name and I think record number), hands it over... you go to the restroom. After you've collected you put it in the two sided door and they pick it up.
I like the way my midwife office does the pee test. They just have a bunch of dixie cups in the bathroom and a container with the little dip sticks on it for testing the urine. They ask before your appointment that you just go pee in a cup and dip in the stick, or put the sick in your 'stream' if you don't want to do the cup thing. Then if the colour is anything but yellow, you report it to them.
This way I can dispose of my pee while I'm in the washroom and not have to tote it around like apple juice.
When I have had to pee in a cup and hold onto it or travel with it, I usually wrap it in paper towels and then put it in a ziplock baggy.
Really? Thank God my doctor has a little cupboard in the bathroom. You open the little door and put your sample in the cupboard. Someone can then open the same cupboard from the other side in the office part and take your sample away.
I thought everyone had that system! Yikes!

I do a pee sample every time at the OB office(right before they weigh me)
At my last appointment, though, I had the 24 hour urine collection job(it is orange). I didn't have a bag to put it in. I had a guy in the office staring at it, trying to figure out what it was, as I was waiting for my blood draw. I'm bringing it in a paper bag next time!
^^ this.
Frankly that IS gross why on earth would they have you do that?

This is all i would be able to think about while i waited.
My OB does it before the exam starts...
That's kind of gross!! Is it the screw cap type?? If so it's not THAT bad, but I'm imagining girls sitting in the waiting room with regular Dixie type cups of pee in their hands!!
My OBs office lets me pee in a cup when they call me in (really, how long does it take??) and when I'm done I put a paper towel over it and bring it out into their 'work area' (the place where they have the test strips and take blood and all that fun stuff), then I sit and they weigh me and check blood pressure and things like that and the nurse then checks my urine.
A urine sample at home for kids, now that's a good idea!
