Success after IF

do I stop antibiotic if diarrhea continues?

I'm worried about dehydration. The diarrhea has gotten less since I started the probiotic yogurts.

She seems like she lost some weight and her eyes look a bit sunken and her color is a bit off. Noticed all this as I was snapping away with my camera. She is having wet diapers though.

Of course I put in a call to the pedi already but I bet you gals answer my post before I get a call back!!

Thanks-A mom that just can't stop worrying ever!!

Re: do I stop antibiotic if diarrhea continues?

  • How bad is the diarrhea?  Glad it's gotten better...  I would give her straight-up probiotics, not just the yogurt.  I think she'd get more that way.  Cal's been on antibiotics a number of times (sadly), and we've always given him probiotics in powder form (in either yogurt or applesauce) from day 1 of the meds.  He maybe has 1 or 2 diarrhea episodes - that's it.

I would chalk up the weight loss/color issue to just being ill, in general.  If she has wet diapers, dehydration shouldn't be a concern.

Lucy had one round of anti-b's that really messed up her tummy.  She'd be screaming and grabbing her tummy and then have awful poos.  Poor thing was so miserable.  The oncall doc said it was more important that she get the anti-b's since it was her 2nd ear infection in 3 weeks.

Fortunately my wonderful pedi called the next day and said to half the dose.  She felt much better and the infection went away.

If you're worried I'd call the pedi and ask about halfing the dose, but keep pumping her full of fluids in the mean time.

  • Bella always gets diarrhea with antibiotics, even with probiotics.  She almost always gets a yeast infection too.  Ugh!  Hope she feels better soon!!

  • I always finished the antibiotic. ....or got them to switch me to a different one.

We had bad ones on certain antibiotics...so when DS got a new ear infection I told them to use a different antibiotic instead of amoxy or whatever that pink one is.  (amoxy/cav too).  We used suprax but that was more for ear infections...i think.

Some days on those antibiotics, DS pooped every hr on the hr and it was usually a blowout and diarrhea.

ask your dr. about florastar for kids.  We give him that all the time although not religiously, but it helps with diarrhea.

pretty much this, E will always get belly issues and always get a diaper rash. But the antibiotic is important, too. Sometimes changing the particular antibiotic is a good idea, but sometimes it prolongs the time the child would be on them. I hope she feels better soon. as long as there are wet diapers, she is ok. My pedi also mentioned if the diarrhea suddenly stops, that is also cause for concern, it can mean she is dehydrated, but as long as you replace fluids, she will be ok.
