So here is the plan: LO gets one bottle a day(2 oz) of BM to help her get ready for when I go back to work(in like 3 weeks). I pump after her morning feeding and while she gets the bottle. Currently I am putting away 2oz everyday in the freezer. When I go back to work the plan is that what I pump while at work is her supply for the following day. This plan was given to me by a LC.
However I would like her on the bottle full time(BM only) sooner. How do I go from one bottle a day to more bottles? Do I need to start pumping after each feeding on the breast? TIA
Re: I want to transition to bottles...advice needed
I'm not sure I quite understand - are you planning on exclusively pumping and bottle feeding, transitioning to no feedings at the breast? Or just during the day when she'd have to get bottles?
If it was me, I'd wait as long as possible, preferably until LO is a month old, before going to exclusively pumping. I've seen a lot of people have problems with supply when they've cut out/skipped too many of the feedings at the breast too early, because milk output ramps up so quickly during that time and the pump isn't as efficient as the baby. When you do have to switch, basically it's just an issue of what you can pump, as long as you can keep up with demand you wouldn't have to pump after each feeding if you can produce enough by pumping while she is eating. If not, you have to add extra pump sessions.
I went from EBF'ing to EP'ing around 4-5 wks. I think if you transition earlier you may have issues with supply as pp mentioned. I started by just pumping instead of nursing and then feeding her what I had pumped. At first I did have to supplement with a little formula (you could use a bit of your stash) so I'd have enough for each feeding.
Now, at 10wks, I pump about 5-6 times a day...usually when she's napping or DH is home. She has started to out eat what I can produce, so I supplement with a little formula as needed. It's a fine balance.
