How much newborn clothing should I get?

I was just wondering, because my mothers says not to get so many clothes for the newborn, since they grow so fast, how much clothes are you getting your new baby?

What do you recommend?

  • They do grow fast. But then again they spit up a lot so you are changing clothes pretty often.

My ds hung out in the sleeper onsie footie things all day.

Also depends on how mucn laundry you want to do.

I'd get maybe 10-20 newborn things. easy things though, like the sleeper sets and what not.

Oh and a TON of burp clothes. But recieveing blankets can work at burp clothes too.

  • I would recommend only 1-2 NB outfits. Buy the rest 0-3 mo. If the NB does fit LO then it won't be for long. If you get 0-3 mo and it's a little big, they will grow into it. And, since you are due in the winter, I would mostly just focus on footed pj's first. I made the mistake of buying some cute little outfits for DD and she pretty much just stayed in pj's since we hardly ever left the house at first (born in Jan. and flu season).
  • I think my checklist I saw in a mag said 12 NB onsies and 2 sleepers were sufficient for the first few weeks.

  • Remember also that when you have your baby shower, chances are you are going to get a ton of NB cloths.

Woah! I think this is wayyyy off. Only 2 sleepers? For a Dec. baby I would harly even use onesies. Just keep in footed sleepers. And, DD was 7.13 when born and only wore NB for a week or so.

Don't forget you will be washing clothes so it isn't like you need a ton. DD hardly ever spit up so we never really did multiple changes in the day.

  • I'm only planning on getting a couple things (sleepers and onesies).  Everything else I'll get in 0-3.

  • If this is your first, I wouldn't get too much because you don't know how big of a baby you will have. With DS, I had to go out and buy some more newborn sized clothing because he wore that size for over a month. So I'm anticipating that little sister will as well. You can always go and buy more clothes once the baby is here.

we didn't get any, and thank goodness because Kate came out too big for NB clothes.  She spent the first 3 months in sleepers and onesies...no clothes.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Sure they grow fast, but in the 4 or so weeks that DD was in newborn clothes (she was born 8 lbs. 5 oz., and 21") she went through A LOT of outfits!!! I only had 2 when we came home but quickly realized that the 'they don't wear newborn clothes' thing is a huge myth! :) She was swimming in her 0-3 month stuff. Grandma to the rescue! She showed up the next day with a bag full of newborn sleepers. I think in the end I had about 12-15 sleepers? And they got rotated pretty frequently. Also? Have a pack of newborn diapers on hand!! She wore them for close to 6 weeks!!!! And again? They go through a lot in the beginning!! :)

No joke...a newborn will probably grow out of newborn things within two weeks.  I would limit your supply.

FWIW, I got absolutely NO newborn clothes at my shower. They were all 0-3 or 3-6. I think the most people think NB clothes are a waste so they don't buy them. I think 2 sleepers is definitely not going to do it. They can wear 2-3 in a day! Especially if you have a winter baby. I would say, if you are really worried about them not getting any use out of them, then to start you should have at least one per day of the week. Then see how it goes.

  • I would have at least 6-7 newborn sized sleepers. My DS was 6 pounds and wore NB size for the first 5 weeks and the NB size was huge on him, so there is no way he could have wore 0-3 at that point.

It's funny because my DD had the same stats when she was born and didn't fit into NB clothes.  She had big feet that were squished in the NB sizes, so we went right to 0-3 months.  I'd wait until after your shower to reassess what you need because people will buy a ton of stuff.

  • Okay Thankyou so much!

Ditto this.  DS had 1 newborn outfit, and I think it lasted a week or two.  We just put him in 0-3 month clothing instead.  Yes, it was a little big, but I'm almost certain I remember him growing out of it within a month--and he has NEVER been a big kid.

  • I bought a pack of each Carter's short sleeve onsies and long sleeve onsies in newborn. I figure the baby can wear 0-3 month clothes even if they are a little big because they won't be for long. In my experience all the clothes received as gifts have been at least three months since I guess people want their gifts to get as much wear as possible.
  • It depends on how big you think your baby might be, as well as brand names.  I have noticed that Wal-Mart stuff fits much bigger.  I had a 7 lb, 15 oz baby, and he wore preemie for a few weeks, then newborn until at least 10 lbs.  I was glad we had NB stuff.
