Anyone else feel...dumber, post-baby?

I just feel as if I'm not as sharp as I used to be, especially at work.  I'm more absentminded, I have more trouble making decisions, and sometimes I just draw a blank mid-sentence and can't think of the word I'm looking for.  I'd like to chalk it up to lack of sleep, but I've never really gotten as much sleep as I should, and I swear I used to be smarter despite that.  Breastfeeding hormones, maybe?  Stress?

And the all-important question -- am I permanently stupid now, or will I get smarter at some point?  :-)

  • I chalk it up to being more focused on my baby girl than work.  I used to be really into my job..but now I have more fun things to daydream about!  I do still love work but I am definitely preoccupied with thoughts of dd during the day.

  • Yes!  I claim that I never had "pregnancy brain" (although I wonder if DH would disagree ;)), but commented that I felt dumber the *day* after he was born!  I don't get it!

Mine is most evident in my thought processes.  I'll start a thought. . . then it gets lost :)  Or else I'll be talking about something, then say, "speaking of. . " and move on to something that seems completely unrelated to everyone but me!

  • Well I constantly misplace my keys and bank card, but that is nothing new:-)

I do find myself at a loss for words sometimes...I will be mid-sentence and not be able to think of the word I want to say...

I will let you know if my brain returns:)

  • you just described me too!

  • I definitely do.  I have the exact same problems you do, can't find the right words, lose track of what I was talking about.  I hope it comes back again someday because I used to be pretty articulate.

  • I definitely feel dumber.  I have trouble finding the words I want to use.  Also mental lists are a thing of the past, if it's not in writing, it's gone for good.

I will say that I feel like I'm getting a little more sharp...either that or I'm just used to be dumb now.

  • I could have written this post, unfortunately. My boss has talked to me a few times about my lack of focus lately. I don't know what it is and it certainly isn't limited to work - I walk from my kitchen to my dining room (all of 3 feet) and I completely forget what I was doing.

Sadly, from what I've heard it doesn't get much better. They call it Mommy Brain.

  • DEFINITELY.  I do think it improves with time, but it takes a very, very long time...lol.

  • Mine has greatly improved over the last 18 months.  I did feel like mush after 10 wks of maternity leave when I returned to work.  I really did chalk it  up to having a whole new host of things to have to focus on.  It will get better!!

  • I still feel this way.  I chalk it up to lack of sleep (though that is finally getting better), and having WAY too much going on in my life (mostly due to being a mom and working FT)!  No real "down" time can really suck the smarts out of you.
