Success after IF

TTC after m/c - where to go from here?

I had a natural m/c at 5w4d last Thursday.  Had an u/s that day and nothing was seen in my uterus (I passed it a couple of hours later), and my beta that day was 16.  I have a f/u with my dr (who's an OB/GYN) next week and I think I'll have another beta to make sure my HCG levels are back to 0.

I was told over the phone we could try again after AF shows up.

No genetic testing was done, but I assume the m/c was due to it being an old egg - chromosomal issues.  Of course it could have been other things, but that's my guess.

I started taking DHEA this week (finally decided it's okay even though I'm still BFing - Cal gets SO little BM in a day).  Trying to get a little healthier...

Anything else I/we should do differently next cycle?  Does having had a m/c make you more susceptible for future ones?  My age alone is a contributing factor.

I'm just a little nervous this is going to happen again.  And what are the odds we'll conceive on the 1st try 3 times in a row?  Pretty slim.  So, I'm thinking there's a good chance we won't even conceive next time.  This could go on for a while...and I don't really have a while...

I'm still feeling fine about the m/c.  But I'm not feeling fine about the road ahead and what we might have to go through to get a sibling for Cal.  :(

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
Life is beautiful!

Re: TTC after m/c - where to go from here?

  • Would you be willing to take clomid, or anything like that to help boost your chances a bit?

Sorry you are even having to think about this.

  • If I were you I'd try to wean Cal before trying again.  Although many women successfully get pg while BFing, it can make it much more difficult for others.
  • I wouldn't jump to conclusions about what caused the m/c.  I had similar timing of a m/c and I had just turned 30 at the time.  I don't necessarily think that your eggs are bunk, but it might not hurt to try 50mg of clomid to make your ovulation stronger to help get pregnant again.

You seem to have good odds of getting pregnant soon again.  Maybe not the first time, but perhaps the second or third.  Normal couples take that long (or longer).  I know that you don't think you have time, but a couple of months isn't going to make a huge difference in your egg quality.  Now wait a couple of years and I'll change my tune.  :)

I have every faith that having a sibling for Cal is going to happen.  Just might take a bit more effort and a bit more wishing.  I think it'll be next cycle!  :)

  • If you are limited in the Cal Sperm, and that link is important to you... I would head to an RE stat and have them make you some better eggs with injectibles, and monitor you more. I would NOT do another natural cycle if you're almost outta that sauce.

I just turned 37. I have no other real issues other than lazy ovaries that tend to make crap eggs. I'm starting to think the reason I've had so many lost pregnancies is b/c I get pregnant easily. Just with crap ingredients. lol. Add that to testing super early and being hyper-sensitive over symptoms... well.... there you go.

I would be so bold to say that you need a bit more help making a decent egg. I say that because I'm in the same boat without a paddle. I did umteen clomo and gonal cycles with IUI, and got a whole lotta nuffin. Even my IVF in CR didn't get me a good egg. It just might take this super doctor, following his protocol to a T... to get my stickily baby. He warned me best:  6 months to you NOW, is like 18 months to you 2 yrs ago. Time is moving along at a rapid pace, best not waste time. Time is money, too.

I look back at my case now and realise I spent a LOT of time and money dinking around. Should have just done it right the 1st time. But I didn't know that then. I was too stubborn, thinking Ava was so easy ;-)

  • As sad as I am for my losses I find the uncertainity of ttc, trying to decide what to do, wondering how long it will take, worrying about another loss, etc. to be the much harder part to deal with.  I'm really not good with unknowns.

I believe that women who have had one miscarriage are at no greater risk at having a second.  For women with two their odds do go up of having another.

Since you are doing IUIs I think it's totally conceivable that you would get pregnant again on the first try.  You're sort of giving yourself optimal conditions so that makes a difference.

What kind of vitamins are you taking now?  I know you said you started DHEA but there's such a slew of other vitamins that can help with ttc.  And, have you considered acupuncture?

I have the book Making Babies which is all about getting your body ready to conceive.  You are welcome to borrow it if you'd like.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • I agree with Davez.  I dinked around a few cycles and DS supply became an issue.  I advocated for injectibles and got pg that cycle.  Since you have not done clomid etc, it might be a good option.

I had a m/c, very similar to yours, and I took a break for a few months.  I wanted my body to heal even though they told me once AF came I was good to go. AF came like a ticking clock but was different and my first cycle back doing treatments I failed to respond completely and it was called off.  So you just never know.  Go with the gut, get aggressive, and make that baby!

  • I am so sorry for your loss hon. This is my third pregnancy. The first two ended in m/c (see siggy) so I totally understand your apprehension. The sucky thing is that really nobody can answer your questions. Most doctors would say that since you have already carried a healthy baby, you should be able to do it again. Many women go on to have healthy pregnancies after having a m/c. The only thing you can do is try again. Praying that you get your sticky BFP soon.

  • I'm so sorry you had to go through that.  I will say that for a lot of people - m/c's happen and it doesn't mean it will happen on every pregnant cycle.  I hate when my drs say that they are fluke, but they are more common than most ppl think - all of us test exactly at 4wks, but those that don't 'don't know they are having a m/c'.  KWIM?

I had an early m/c and got pg the cycle afterwards, but I know you can't exactly 'try' on your own and they won't let you continue with IUI until you get a real AF.

I know the road ahead looks bleak, but keep trying.  One m/c isn't the end of the road.  My friend is 39 and is TTC #1 and she has asked the same thing, but she gets back on the horse because she knows she has to give it her best try.  Even  young girls just get bad eggs sometimes - it happens and even iwth IVF ppl get it.

  • just wanted to say that i've been absent from this board a while and i'm sorry for your loss.
