With my last two children, I have asked the god parents after the child is born. I don't know if it make a difference with different beliefs or not. Just my two cents!
We've selected guardians in the event something happens to us, which is different than the traditional Catholic godparents. Not sure which applies to your situation. They just said yes (yay!) and we meet with the lawyer next month to set up wills and a trust for the kiddo. The wills we should have had in place already, but we definitely want them before he arrives.
We asked when we first announced that we were pregnant to the couple-in-question. But we are their child's godparents, so I don't know if that makes a difference.
Re: Picking God Parents
It's a little different for us since we're having twins, but we asked once we had picked out their names.
We chose one set of godparents for each baby, so when we asked we said, "will you be Brady's godparents" and "will you be Bennett's godparents".
We chose around 15 weeks. It was an easy choice as my sister and his brother are getting married next year and we adore both of them.
It's all up to you when you choose. I don't really think it matters.
With my godson we weren't asked until just before the christening.
With my best friends child... she asked me as soon as she found out she was pregnant if I would be the legal guardian if anything ever happend to her.
