I wonder if it's different from here where most kids carry character backpacks. I love some of the PBK backpacks but DD fell in love with an Ariel one at the Disney store...
DD has a pink backpack with silver stars on it that I bought at Old Navy last year...but most of the other kids have Thomas and Cars backpacks (most of the kids in her preschool class were boys). A few LL Bean backpacks. I know this by the way because it's a co-op and one of the co-oper's jobs is to put backpacks out after class.
I really like the PBK backpacks too...but DD's is still perfectly fine (and cute). I think I'll let her pick out a new one when she goes to Kindergarten (in two years).
This is close to the bag that DD takes. Her's has a larger pocket that holds papers. Her friends have all kinds of different bags. She likes it. It is big enough for her lunch, and any other things she needs for school and she can carry it easily. She has a little REI back pack if she needs more room, but doesn't really ever use it for that.
Not a fan of PBK packs, they seem to babyish for DD. I can't see her carrying one.
Usually plain ones, LLBean, Jansport, PBK but a few have character backpacks. My DD had a Hello Kitty her first year from Target she picked out & it fell apart & was a total piece of crap. Last year I bought her a PBK pink poka dot one & it lasted a year & still looks brand new--she'll use it again this year--I did not get personalized for safety sake. I've seen 4th & 5th graders w/ plain PBK backpacks & never thought they looked babyish...hmmm....
I teach kindergarten and most of my kids have your run of the mill Target/Walmart character backpacks. BUT, most of those backpacks bust a zipper well before Christmas. At that point, it is expensive to buy a backpack b/c most of the stores are out of them. The brands that I see outlasting others are LLBean, Lands' End, PBK, and Jansport. The kids that have those packs generally are still using them in 1st grade too. They wash up nice and hold up well. Can't say that I've ever seen a character backpack without SOMETHING broken on it by the end of the year!

This exactly. I'm a elementary school teacher and most of the kids have LL Bean or the character packs. LL Bean lasts.
