Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Do you wake your baby up if she rolls onto her tummy in her sleep

I'm just curious if you wake up your baby if he/she rolls onto his/her tummy while they are sleeping. My 5 1/2 month old is now constantly rolling over onto her tummy while sleeping. The other night I woke her up 3 times to put her on her back, but I can't stay up all night every night. What do you do? Did your doctor offer advice on this?

Thanks in advance!

  • I don't. He sleeps better since he learned to roll onto his tummy.  As long as baby can roll,  and lift their head from side to side, I'd let them sleep. DS can totally lift his chest off the ground and I've seen him do it in his sleep so I am fine with it.

  • If I woke her when she rolls over onto her tummy, neither of us would get any sleep. We stopped swaddling her once she started rolling, and she can roll both ways, and hold her head up well, so I'm not too concerned.

  • My guy hasn't figured out to turn his head to the sides when he's on his tummy, so we have to put him down asleep or he just cries and puts his face into the mattress. He's insane.

  • My DH was rolling her over but I just leave her alone.  I spoke with my pedi about it at the last appointment and he said he used to flip his kids back over too but as soon as he flipped them they would roll back over, he said just let her be.

  • If she rolls on her tummy during sleep, we do not flip her back over onto her back.  Pedi of course said to always put baby to sleep on her back but when she starts flipping onto her tummy on her own you don't need to get up to flip her back. I believe the thinking is that if they are strong enough to flip, they are strong enough to hold head up, etc. so as not to suffocate.

  • As long as she can hold her head up and turn from side to side she will be fine. That's what my pedi told me. Thank goodness! I just put my little one in a sleeper with arms and legs so that she doesn't get cold because we stopped swaddling her so she wouldn't get tangled up.
