Northern California Babies

:::BettyBabyMaker:::

My DH was 10lbs, 5ozs when he was born.  So, at my last appointment I specifically asked what my chances were for having a large baby like him.  She said it wasn't really a concern as large birth weight is not hereditary. :)

Re: :::BettyBabyMaker:::

  • Good to hear!  But there must be some reason for the correlation among high birth weights in families, don't you think?  On my dad's side of the family, every single one of the cousins were "big" (it's all relative, I know... but 8-10 lbs. was the norm) AND we were all born with large heads.  So if it's not hereditary, I wonder how that happens?  I should really do my research rather than assuming I'm going to have a giant, big-headed baby.  :)

    Thanks!

  • You know...I was told that too as my mom was 9lbs, my aunts were both 9lbs when born....I was 9.5, my sister was only 7.10 but she came 3 weeks early.  My cousins were both over 9lbs and they were c-section 2 week early babies and EJ was 9.4.  All of these are babies from my mom's side.  The babies on my dad's side were all in the high 8's.

    I still feel like there is something about high birth weights running in families.  None of these mothers gained more than 20lbs with their pregnancies, including me.  So I dunno.

    BUT, I do have a theory...I think GD might have factored into some of this...they didn't used to test for GD.  I had it, and they say it can contrubute to high birth weight.

    That's interesting.  I should ask my mom about GD in the family, but since she's never mentioned it, I have a feeling it hasn't been common in the family.  She loves to tell me all about her morning sickness- I think she just likes having someone to lament with!  And mine hasn't even been that bad!

  • My MIL just LOVES to share the horror story of delivering John, and how unlike most babies, his wide/broad shoulders were the hardest part. She thought it was fine after she delivered the head, but then his shoulders got stuck. Great. He has been broad shouldered his entire life, just like his dad.

  • Both my brother and I had large heads. My mom loooooves to tell the story about the circumference of my brother's head.

    But DS's head was big too; we knew this from my big u/s.  It ended up being 1/4 inch bigger than my brother's head. I was hoping that would shut my mom up about it, but not so much. Stick out tongue
