High-Risk Pregnancy

Bedrest 101-a few tips :)

Hello ladies!  Well were on our 3rd round of bedrest here and I was just thinking of a few things that I have learned and started doing over the course of the last few pregnancies that have helped me get through.

I'm going to make this quick since the tornado sirens are going off here!

  • Take the time to blow dry your hair, put on a little make up a few times a week to keep yourself feeling pretty.
  • Buy yourself some cute pajamas....depending on your budget, I don't care if you shop at Walmart online or whatever, but you will be wearing comfy clothing for a long time so the less slob like you feel the better.
  • If you dont have a dishwasher.....buy disposable!!  This will help ease the load of anyone that has to help you.  Get some paper plates, bowls and plastic silverware.
  • When you make a trip to the kitchen to get lunch also bring back a snack for later and an extra beverage so that you don't have to get up again for food so soon.
  • Get netflix....seriously people!!  If you have a computer you can watch tv shows and movies online or through your Wii, and you can order movies, it only takes about 2-3 days to get a new one once you send it back.  Well worth the $9 a month and you can cancel as soon as your bedrest is over if you like!
  • If you like to read stock up on books.  Have someone go to the library for you or borrow a few from your friends, or purchase them used.  You can go through a book in a day or two easily when you have so much time on your hands so dont spend a lot of money on them!
  • Most importantly:  communicate with your SO/DH.  There are a lot of feelings going on for both of you related to your bedrest.  It's very difficult for everyone involved, mostly for you, but they also are affected by the situation.  There may be resentment on either side when it is really unwarranted but if you talk through your feelings you will realize it and come to an understanding about what you are both going through.

Good Luck with your bedrest!  I know it is very difficult but here I am doing it for a 3rd time now and I can tell you that it is SOOO absolutely worth it :)  It is only just a few months out of your life and you will enjoy your LO for the rest of your life!

Re: Bedrest 101-a few tips :)

  • I totally agree with continuing your daily routine (hair, makeup) if you can swing it.  Makes you feel human and 1000x better.  I also ditto Netflix; it saved me the first 4-6 weeks.  I actually wore normal clothes until my twin body outgrew them; that normalcy also made me feel better in those early weeks.

  • Thanks for a great post! Love your attitude!

I have good days and bad days, and this is my second time on bed rest, week 6.

I totally agree on getting dressed, doing your hair/makeup, eventhough I don't do it every day, it helps having visitors because I get motivated to try and look better, and not feel like a lump.

I have also found that working from home (if your job allows as mine does) has saved my sanity many days!

And if you don't have family nearby, and can afford to, outsource as much as possible: cleaning help, meal preparation, grocery delivery, etc.  Every little bit helps.

Also, Amazon Prime membership has saved me many days when I desperately wanted to order something either to get things ready for the baby's room or just for myself.  2nd day free delivery or just $4 for next day delivery.

    Thanks again, and good luck!

  • Thanks for these great tips.  I'm a newbie to the board, and had a week of bedrest last week after a hospital stay for pre-term contractions and a dynamic cervix.  Tentatively approved to return to work this week, but preparing myself for a possible return to bed rest later in the pregnancy.  Best to be prepared, and this information is really helpful.
