So, IUI #4 was a bust. AF came yesterday, just as I knew she would. I'm getting frustrated with this process, but keep hanging on b/c IUI #1 resulted in a BFP (and later a m/c), so in my head, I know it CAN work for me. Additionally, IUI's are covered by my insurance (unlimited!), so my OOP cost is very little, which I'm so very thankful for. My RE would like to see me move toward IVF, however, my insurance doesn't cover it (loophole in the NJ mandate, most women are covered), so we continue with IUI's. We are beginning IUI #5 today. If this doesn't work, we will be taking a break for a few months to let my body "de-hormonalize".....I've been pumping hormones into my body for 6 months straight and it's time to come clean and start fresh........physically and emotionally.
The plan for now is to try a few more IUI's after the break (sometime in late Oct after we return from vaca) and hope that it works (with my newly "cleansed" reproductive system!). Until then, I will be working toward shedding some extra pounds and spending some much needed time destressing at the gym (something new for me, as I usually have to force myself to go and even thinking about exercising makes me stress out!).
If all this still doesn't not produce a BFP, then we will have to think about IVF, which will force me to consider leaving my job in favor of a new one with benefits that cover IVF. While I really hate the prospect of doing this (even though I'm not happily skipping to work every morning now), I feel it's ridiculous to spend A LOT of $$ on a procedure that can easily be (and should be) covered by insurance. Maybe that makes me selfish, but it doesn't seem fair that I'm being punished just for working for a smaller company, which is why it falls in a loophole and isn't covered.
So, that's the "plan" for now! Thanks for listening and good luck and baby dust to you all! You ladies are the best!
Re: IUI Update and Looking Ahead (Long)
whose insurance are you under, yours or DHs? is it possible if you switch to the other that it would cover IVF? i also live in NJ but i work in NY and at the time DH and I were TTC and went to an RE we initially had an HMO and had crappy fertility coverage. DH was in the process of switching jobs, so he made sure to bump up to the better insurance coverage at his new job - which gave us unlimited IUIs and 3 IVFs, with minimal OOP payments. We wound up doing 2 IUIs, and I had a chemical pg with the second. Knowing we had good coverage I wanted to be more aggressive so I told RE I wanted to do an IVF, and we conceived DD #1 on that very first IVF with ICSI.
if switching insurances wouldn't help then i do agree with you that you should probably look into getting a new job at a bigger co. with better insurance coverage if the next IUI doesn't work. but hopefully you won't have to go that route.
I'm sorry that this IUI was a bust. And while that is great that IUI's are covered and unlimited but that is seriously sucky about the lack of IVF coverage.
I hope this next IUI round is your BFP!
Kinsale, both DH and I have basically the same coverage through each of our employers. We both work for small organizations.......neither of our employers have over 50 employees, which is why IVF isn't covered under either policy. While I dread the thought of looking for and starting a new job, staying with my current employer isn't worth the possible 20k+ that I would have to spend OOP staying with my current job. Although, I've been toying with the thought of switching jobs anyway as my current position doesn't offer much of a challenge anymore and very little opportunity for advancement...........but does offer the flexibility to make all of my RE appointments and it's close to my house. We'll weigh the options when the time comes.
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, ladies!
