My DD puts her whole body on top of it like it's a mattress topper or something!
Your post reminds me of when we let our DD sleep with us once. Both my husband and I sleep with our pillows on top of our faces. My daughter freaked out and started crying. She thought we had left her or something. When I took the pillow off of my head she saw me and calmed down.
Ds frequently piles his pillow and blankets and stuffed animal on top of his head...especially in the morning when it's starting to get light in his room and he wants to block it out. I don't worry about him. He's long been able to move or uncover himself if he's uncomfortable or can't breathe well.

Yeah. I started just to block out noise/light. I got so accustomed to it, though, that now I do it all the time... even when it's quiet and dark. I like sleeping with my arm over my head and it's more comfortable with my arm lying on the pillow than on nothing. I know it sounds weird. I must have got the habit from my husband.
My son has a lovey that is a small blanket and he falls asleep with it on his face every night. I will go move it when he is asleep and within 10 minutes he has it back on his face.
