So we've had minor ammonia stink on and off since we moved to an area with very hard water. I stripped about a month ago and that took care of the problem for about two weeks. I stripped again (using Dawn and super hot water in my washer, then rinsed, rinsed, rinsed, and rinsed some more) a week ago. This morning DD's overnight diaper (a soaked Goodmama under an Econobum cover) positively reeked of ammonia. It was the first time this diaper had been worn since the last stripping. We usually use wool covers but she has outgrown her old ones, and the one I just knit was being lanolized. I should mention that last week, the ammonia was so bad that the wool soaker she wore actually started to smell like ammonia.
During the day we use pockets with mostly mf inserts (some hemp and cotton in there too), and they don't smell like ammonia.
Is this really a build-up problem if I JUST stripped? Could it be something else? Do I need to worry about it?
Re: Major ammonia issue - please help
No answers, but I am dealing with the same thing with our night diapers (B4's and GM's with Blueberry covers). In the morning she has major amonia smell, but no issues with her daytime diapers.
I don't think it's a build up issue...was wondering if I should switch to pockets for nightime - when I've put her in a double stuffed BG there wasn't amonia in the morning, but she also wasn't soaked that morning like she usually is, so I think I need to repeat the test (but since I only have one BG pocket it has to wait a few days). Or wondered if I should start using a wool cover/shorties instead (I have a couple that I haven't had the nerve to start using).
Right now it doesn't seem to bother her skin, but I want to get this figured out and under control before she ends up with amonia burns.
