Car seat istallation

Hello!  Has anyone installed their car seats yet?  Do I have to have someone certified to do it or just someone who honestly knows what they are doing (such as a policeman)?  I was at the hospital last week and they said I had to make an appointment so this was the first I heard of people being certified for this!

 Any thoughts?

Also--good videos that show Lamaze breathing or just keep the breathing steady, change positions (if possible), and keep the liquids coming in?  It's been 6-7 years since I've done this so.....

Thanks!

Re: Car seat istallation

  • Many police departments have specially trained people who know how to properly install car seats and will do it for free but you do have to make an appointment.  I'm going to do this as soon as we get them just so I'm comfortable with the installation.  DH and I are pretty good with these things, but since the service is offered at our local station, why not have a "professionally trained" person do it!  Good luck!

  • I installed my carseat last week using the LATCH system in my car. It almost seemed too simple so i decided to have it inspected by the police. Well, the inspection was completely pointless because it was in fact that easy to install. It did give me peace of mind, but IMO it's very easy to install a carseat if you follow directions.

  • It depends. Something like 85% off all car seats are not properly installed. However, in most cases it is because the person didn't read the manual. You should read the entire manual (and car manual), so you know where your car seat can be installed in your car (not all cars allow for car seats in the middle), etc.

I have installed all of our seats, and then I have them checked by a certified person. I have always had mine installed correctly, but I am anal about car seats, and I have read the manual front to back atleast 2x.

Also, just because someone is a policeman/fireman does not mean that they no jack about installing seats. I have seen a ton of posts from ladies that had their seats checked at police/firestations and they were told incorrect information, etc.

Do what you feel comfortable with.

  • I need to figure out where to go to have someone check ours, because my car doesn't have the metal hooks behind the seat that latch in the carseat. It seems so flimsily installed with just the seatbelt!
  • Our hospital gave us a list of places that do car seat certifications- police departments, fire stations, the hospital.  You are supposed to install the car seat yourself, and then they will check to make sure everything is correct, and go over any problems with you.

  • I see you are in the Charlotte area (I am as well). Dh and I have car seat bases that we are going to install into each of our cars around 35 weeks. We plan to take our cars to a local fire station to have them checked. I would possibly call the stations in your area to see when they do these checks. Hope this helps!
  • My DH installed it last weekend.  He works at a car dealership and they inspect them too.  He read the directions and since we have the latch system hook up, it was pretty simple for him.

  • I don't know about your state, but in Colorado, we have certain fire stations that are "certified" to help you install your car seat. Our website is something like carseatscolorado.com, and they tell you where you can go to have them inspected, since not every police or fire station can help you. Maybe your state has a website like this with info...

    This!

You're supposed to try to do it yourself and then get it checked.  In our area police/fire don't check it because they don't have time (hmm...budget cuts anyone!?!).  We had to sign up for a free appointment at the Women's Heath Center that is a part of the hospital I'm delivering at.  We will be going to that on the 28th.

A lot of times your local health department will offer car seat inspections. Ours will do installations and/or inspections. We plan to install ourselves, then get it inspected and fixed if necessary.

  • We had our bases installed at week 36.  There are teo officers in our city's police department who are trained and certified to install carseats.  We called to make an appointment and one of the officers happened to be in and told us to come on down.  It took him less than 20 minutes to do both cars.
