It is fairly common for Baptist churches to be somewhat anti-drinking, but varies. I'm not Baptist now but I grew up in an independent Baptist church, and I think some people drank but not most.
LO goes to a Baptist daycare, so we've begun to learn about the religion. From what we've learned it's case-by-case or church-by-church. Also I believe there is a difference between Baptist and Southern Baptists and more of the Southern Baptists don't drink.
I guess it seems like the Catholic religion. We were raised STRICT Catholic-church every single week (even on vacation we'd find a church!), confession if you miss church once, church on every holy day, the whole 9 yards. Whereas DH deems himself Catholic and went to Catholic school, but didn't go to church every week and didn't confess before taking communion if he'd missed a week.
southern baptists no, its not good to drink. if you work for the SBC you cant be seen drinking in public etc. the reasoning is based on scriptures about drunkenness and not being in control of the mind etc.
its an ongoing conflict within the church. its more of a personal decision whether or not to drink, i think.
I am a Baptist and I drink in moderation (1 or 2 glasses of wine once or twice a week). I really don't understand how any Christian religion doesn't condone drinking. Jesus' 1st miracle was turning water to WINE at a wedding. He also drank wine at the 1st supper. There is nothing wrong with drinking, there is something wrong with being a drunkard which means getting totally wasted. It's just like anything in life, for instance it's ok to eat food but not too much and then it could be considered gluttony. Everything in moderation. I have literally considered going to a non-denominational church because I don't agree with the no drinking mind set at all, but I do like my church and don't think that everyone has that point of view.

I grew up in a Baptist family in VA. No one ever had an issue with drinking. In fact my family drinks a lot!
My DH grew up in a Baptist family in SC and they are all VERY anti-alcohol. I think it varies a lot depending on the church and area of the country.
This is re-assuring. Since we aren't a part of the church we don't really know what the church's policy is on drinking where LO goes to DCP. I had one glass of wine at dinner the night our sitter babysat LO and she goes to the church/school there so I hope I didn't offend her!
I grew up Baptist, and most people I knew were very anti-drinking. The church I grew up in was anti-alcohol in general--1 drink was considered a sin. A lot of the people I know disapprove of my lifestyle in general, especially the alcohol consumption.
lol we are not 100% baptist, but we go to a baptist MDO/preschool and went to baptist college - and no, we/they are not at all anti-drinking. (as far as we've encountered)
