Weird Question

Did anyone notice changes in their hair during pregnancy?

I feel like my hair is getting curlier.  Sounds weird, I know.  My hair seems to have a curl to it that even my straightener can't fix.

Re: Weird Question

  • Yes, but I think that mine got better and it was from the prenatals.

Oooh...that's interesting!  What makes you think it was the prenatals?

  • You grow new hair during pregnancy and sometimes it's a different texture or even color! It's all from the hormones. The prenatals give added nutrition leading to stronger hair/nails but those changes occur with or without the vitamins. Many women lose the new hair growth a few months pp.

  • I had always had real long hair and I cut it really short right before I got pregnant.  I hated it and was so excited when I became pregnant because everyone told me it would grow so fast and be really shiny and pretty.

Didn't happen!  My hair was awful during my pregnancy.  It felt like wire and had this weird wave to it.  It maybe grew an inch the whole time.  Right after I delivered, it started going back to normal and grew like a weed again.

I asked my pedi and she said it can go either way.  Either your hair looks super healthy and grows fast or it looks/feels awful and doesn't grow.  It all depends on how the extra hormones affect your body.

  • My hair is super fine and when I was pregnant it grew faster and got thicker only in the back. Now my hair looks like I belong to the lion king or something. So glad I am getting my hair cut tomorrow.

  • My hair looks great.  It's really shiny and very thick.  It's just...got this curl thing going on...in random places.

  • My hair is more frizzy.  I hate it.  I also have grown some light tummy hair.  I keep telling DH I am turning into him with all the hair.

  • I wanted to grow my hair out before getting pregnant, but unexpectedly got pregnant before my hair could grow back out Smile. I was excited because everyone told me the prenatals would make my hair grow faster.

    Yeah. Liars.

It only grows faster in the places I don't want it to grow. My belly is growing it's own winter coat. Josh says it's not noticeable, but it annoys me because it's not normally there. Luckily it's blonde I suppose.

I started taking prenatals about 2 months before I got pregnant and the hair changes started right around the time I found out I was pregnant.  I assumed it was too soon to be from pregnancy.

  • Mine is thicker and has grown a lot faster too.  It really annoyed me when I was pregnant with Rowen because my hair was super short and the hair cuts wouldn't keep up with it.  This time I notice its got a curl to it too.

  • My hair has had a touch of kink to it ever since puberty.  So when I got pregnant it got a bit more of a kink.  It's somewhere between straight and curly.  One of those where you don't think it has a wave to it until I straighten it with a straighting iron.  And some of these changed happened to hair that was from the top of my head to my ears so it was old growth, not new which surprised me.  My hair has gotten a bit thicker which I appreciate because I have fine hair (yeah, I know it's going to go away) but the annoying thing is that my bangs are growing unevenly.  They've always grown faster than the rest of my hair but now not only are they growing fast they are growing unevenly.  So even right after a professional hair cut I have to curl them a bit with a round brush and the hairdryer or it looks like a 3 year old cut my bangs.

My guess it's hormones (not prenatals for me) because I didn't start taking "real" prenatals until 2nd trimester.  I was taking a regular multivitamin and supplementing it with extra folic acid though.  Also since the change was similar to what I got around puberty I was attributing the changes to hormonal changes.

  • I didn't notice much, except it grew faster when I was pg.  However, I was NOT prepared for it to fall out in clumps after dd was born!  It really freaked me out - I thought I'd be bald by the time it stopped.  I would take a shower and pull enough hair out of the hair catcher to cover my entire hand - fingers and all - every single day.  Thankfully it stopped falling out after about a month or 2 but I was worried for a while there.
