Bad language around kids...

My cousin stopped by today with her 9 year old daughter to meet our LO.  We were talking about her boss who is a realy jerk, and how he treated her badly in a certain situation and I said "That sucks!"  After they left, DH said we should be careful about we talk around kids, others and our own.  I do curse at times when talking to other adults, but make sure to watch myself carefully around other's kids, and will certainly with my own too.  However, I said I didn't think saying "that sucks" was a bad word/thing to say.  He disagrees.  I can't say that I would be bothered in the future if DS said that.  How do you feel about this - would you be upset if someone said something like this around your children?

  • I don't think "sucks" Is a bad word.

However, my MIL thinks its horrible...worse than "crap" or other mild swear words. DH and his sister banned from saying it. She thinks its sexual.

  • I admittedly have the mouth of a sailor when I'm at home and it is something I've thought about and know I need to work on.  While saying "that sucks" is minimal to other things that come out of my mouth, I can't said I'd want DD running around saying it.  I can understand why your husband said that it is a "bad word" especially when it comes to LOs.

  • I don't think it's as bad as a swear word, but I wouldn't want my young child walking around saying it. Especially a 2-3 year old who picks up everything you say.
  • For me (and DH) it depends on the person/kid(s). Right now, we don't watch our language since LO doesn't understand, and with certain friends we know well enough to know what we can/can't say. If we don't know the people that well (or their stance on swearing), we keep it clean

  • I, unfortunately, have a potty mouth and that is something I know I need to work on... With that being said,  I don't think "that sucks" is a "bad word" but I would not like my LO running around saying it.  When I was younger we were not able to say the word "stupid" and I think "that sucks" falls into that same category.
  • I don't think saying "that sucks" is bad at all.  I do however have a problem with kids who say "you suck"

Ditto this, though I'm pretty sure we weren't allowed to say it until high school, even.  If you think about the origin of the saying (that sucks d!ck) it's kind of crass for younger kids to be saying, I guess.  It's not a phrase I plan on using.

  • I have a terrible potty mouth.  I try to watch it and fail miserably.  My kid is going to be telling his preschool teacher to f*ck off.  Hopefully with years of trying I'll be able to bring it down from R to PG-13.

This. I don't want my kid saying it mostly for the fact that it just sounds stupid. I try very hard in my own personal life to "choose my words wisely" in order to most carefully express how I feel, and for me swear words don't do that 100% of the time. I think people sound stupid when they swear just to swear, and while "that sucks" isn't a swear word in my opinion, it accomplishes about the same. I'd rather my kids learn to clearly express how they actually feel, and for me "that sucks" just doesn't cut it.
