I have an UPmama which I love for the most part but for things like housework I find a SSC easier.. right now I am using a Snugli (yuck) which was a gift.
I have the ergo and a mei tei and a hot sling and a ring sling- but I keep going back to the Bjorn. DS likes to face outward when I'm running errands. He hates being squashed in the ergo, and the slings are good for sleeping, but he loves the Bjorn best as much as I wanted him to love the slings. Bjorn is most comfortable for my back anyway.
It's super easy to put on, comfy for me and LO (he's always passed out within 5 minutes of being put in), not too hot, and DH loves it too. One of my very favorite baby investments.

If you can try them on before buying. I thought the bjorn was really uncomfortable for my back and it didn't seem comfortable for LO. Ergo puts all the weight on your hips which is huge for comfort. Everyone is different.
I haven't tried an ergo or a woven yet, but just thought I'd tell you how much I love love my Mei Tai! It took DS a bit of time to get used to the moby but he loved the Mei Tai right away. The first time I put him on my back he laughed hysterically....AND I actually got the laundry done that day, lol.

as far as SSCs, we have a Patapum and an AngelPack. I think they are both very similar (and very similar to an Ergo, although I do not have one), but the patapum is much less expensive (around $75). It's also less pretty - we have a khaki one, I think they come in navy and black, too. I got the AngelPack on babysteals.com, I think they run about $150 full price.
I love our beco. it's easy to put on, it distributes the weight nicely, and there's no learning curve for husband. ;-) the newest one will have a way for your LO to face out.
I've also got a woven that I use just as much as the beco. I love how diverse it is. but if you really want the woven-love lowdown - ncbelle is your girl :-)

I have a Beco that I love. They are coming out with the Gemini which looks like it will work awesome. The baby can face out etc. Most people speak highly of the Beco. Ergo and Mei Tai so I doubt you can go wrong with them.
I use a mei tai, but of all the SSCs that I have tried, I like the Pikkolo best - probably because it's so like a mei tai. The shoulders have great padding and I think a criss-cross is easier than two clips. I definitely recommend trying them on before buying, whatever you choose! GL.
Re: Please recommend a softstructured carrier
We LOVE our Ergo!!

Forgot the "and why" part, lol.

Thanks!
I think DS would really like the Pikkolo.
