quick, random help please- weird BFing question

Um, can I go on a white water rafting trip and wear a wetsuit for 4ish hours without getting mastitis? I'm worried that the tight suit and non-breathable material will give me mastitis. I'm prone to plugged ducts as it is...

I've been WW rafting before, but we didn't wear wetsuits. Apparently the place we are going this weekend requires them though. I get a plugged duct if I wear a tight bra... I'm not sure about a wet suit at all.

Re: quick, random help please- weird BFing question

  • I would think it would be OK because the pressure is distributed, and there should be more pressure towards to midline (nipple) rather than because of a tight underwire or sideseam like with a bra.

  • I'm not familar with mastitis, but I'd think just about anything would be fine if it was only four hours. Are there preventative measures you could take right before or after?

Well, I'm going to nurse her right before we go- but 4 hours is still on the longish side for me, by the 4 hour mark I'm generally engorged a bit. So I'm worried that the pressure+being full+not breathable=mastitis. I've never worn a wetsuit before though, so maybe I'm wrong about how it will fit? I have one bra that I absolutely cannot wear even for an hour because it gives me plugged ducts...

I agree with this but since you are prone make sure to drink a TON of water.  As soon as you can nurse or pump I would too and stay hydrated (like more than normal hydrated) after too.

    Hopefully you will be OK!

  • I wish their was a choice that wasn't "go on a half day rafting trip" and "go shopping with my FIL's girlfriend I've never met". Argh. I just found out that the actual rafting time is 4 hours, not counting the safety info beforehand, getting into wet suits, etc.  I'm not at all confident I can go that long without nursing or pumping, and I don't know that I want to leave Emmy for that long with strangers to her while I'm unreachable :(

Having a minor melt down about the trip, can you tell?

    Oh Boo!

Is there anywhere that you and Emmy could do a mini hike together that is near where the rafting starts or ends??

I am also having a panic attack about my weekend trip!  Camping with DH's family in 90 degree weather and I just found out it takes nearly 6 hours to get there.  Not fun for my kid who hates heat and cars!

I don't know, I'll have to look into hiking. I don't know how to politely say, "I don't want to hang out with your girlfriend, FIL"

I'm excited about the trip in general, and part of me thinks white water rafting would be really fun... I'm just not sure if it's worth it with the BFing issues, and the leaving Emmy with people she doesn't know well while I can't be reached issue...

  • I asked DH about this since he used to be into jet skiing.

He said hell no, don't do the wet suit - "That would clog my ducts!"

thanks :) I think I'm just going to pass. It would be fun, but I can always do it again when I'm not nursing... we go to CO like twice a year. My FIL can go, and they'll enjoy it. I can survive an awkward afternoon of shopping.. followed by an awkward evening of meeting GFs kids Tongue Tied

It's reeally awkward to hang out with the GF when FIL tells us all these stories about going to bars and hooking up with random chicks Zip it!

OT, but I get such a kick out of seeing a BFAR mother with a ten month old say this!

The joys of family vacations. At least you'll have amusing stories to share afterwards.

  • The wetsuit itself won't cause any problems; we wakeboard almost year round so I have TONS of experience with BF and wearing neoprene. It's just like wearing a tight shirt- it's stretchy, moves with you, doesn't give pressure points anywhere.
That being said, I wouldn't go based on all the other conditions. Too long away, having to leave DD with ppp she doesn't know, being unreachable...
